As BP struggles to mitigate the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, animals continue to suffer the effects of the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history.

Here are two graphic reminders of the toll being felt by the animals of the Gulf of Mexico. First, Mike Ellis, a boat captain who is attempting to help BP with the cleanup, describes his efforts to save Kemp's Ridley turtles, and finding the endangered animals caught in the oil company's burn-offs.

Second, here is a report by NBC News on the plight of birds such as the endangered brown pelican, which, after finding themselves coated in oil, are literally cooked to death because of the high temperatures and an inability to use their feathers to cool down their body temperature.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. I think what we are experiencing as a civilization has its roots deep in the fundamental world views of the Western man. By this I mean of course the European human with his descendents and his philosophies which are today the landlords of our planet. They are the inheritors of western mentality with all the ensuing repercussions, both physical and spiritual. These views have penetrated into the psyche of contemporary man to such a degree that every decision, whether it concerns agriculture, resource management, land use, energy policy, etc., is made with this world view as a basis. Nature is there for reaping material benefits from. This of course has been old news for quite some time to people conscious of this fundamental fallacy in how we see nature.

I agree. We should be ashamed because of our dependence on oil, and I hope this ends the discussion once and for all about alternative fuels and saving jobs in the oil industry. Time to move on people.

I am so disgusted with this whole thing. I was never in favor of Gulf drilling. I lived on the Gulf for 39 years and loved the beaches and the wildlife. My heart goes out to the people that make their living on the gulf and for all the animal life that is suffering terribly. I am afraid this will be the death of the Gulf of Mexico and I cannot imagine how much that will affect the rest of the world. I think that BP should have to compensate all the people that made their loivings on the Gulf and I think BP should be required to step up their efforts to stop the leak and get this mess cleaned up.

This is very sad, excess of 50 days since the leak and can see very little progress considering thescope of the spill , the damages and whiuch will continue for a long long time. A tragedy that will be felt for generations to come.

Boycott BP , They MUST come good on their payment to those affected by loss of income, lifesytle. The wildlife damage is beyond scope. BP Liability MUST not op stop with a single payment.

It will be a very long and hard recovery and suggest $20 billion is no where close the damage done.Try 100+N billion abnd you mat get close to the mark.
The use of trains, buses, bicycles and other means of transport will assist in lowering the reliance on oil. Hit BP where it hurts and that will be at the petrol pump. Unfortunately the station owners will be deprived of their income adding more losses that BP must pay.

BP and the US Govt must make use of any and all avalible means to contain the spillage and consequent damage to the enviroment. The leak must be capped. The Gulf must be cleaned. Any remedy can only assist and surely not add to the damages done by the spillage.

Boycott BP , minimize your oil consumption, pray for those affected.

I wonder what Mother Earth is thinking at this time.

I am a nature lover who is terribly disturbed by this 'MAN Made' disaster, its one of the most horrendous nature disasters I've seen in my life time! Man is slowly destroying planet earth, it's a pitiful site to see our precious marine and wild life die in such a painful and needless way! Our world and all its diverse beauty is a gift to each of us (we do not own it) but we are held accountable as stewards of these priceless gifts!.. I hold our elected government officials as accountable for this oil disaster as BP! They are playing deadly games in the name of politics! It seems corruption, greed and lying have become the 'norm' in the name of serving our country..These men and women are playing "god" but their credibility as intellgient, respected and dignified representatives of our people, country and environment are in doubt, its becoming increasingly clear of the responsiblity each are playing in the downward spiraling course happening in our country, its time WE reclaim it! (are these senators, representatives, president and adminstration examples of our brightest and best, if so their character is in question?)
Our character is the window of the soul, its transparent and should not be conpromised, what good is it to compromise our character for worldly gain? Its quite evident when we see the negative events transpiring before our eyes to question the capability of those who truly are serving this country with beneficial and selfless priorities, putting their service to taxpayers and country first?
..Something is terribly wrong when a country blessed with such wonderful resources, diverse natural beauty, who co-exsist with a unbelievable bounty of magnificent animal and marine wildlife who totally depend on our stewardship for their survival..How can anyone with clear conscience justify how the federal government can bury their heads in the sand by not taking 'immediate' control of this oil disaster? Money, status and human ego can never replace the natural order of everything in this world! When will greedy humans recongize that the survival of this planet depends on living in equal harmony with all God's creatures!

BP is killing the Gulf of Mexico it is time for Obama to ask the world for help , BP only knows one thing and tha is to keep trying to collect the Oil drilling two more wells only to get more Oil sure it will stop the spill after all the
oil been taken But by then The Gulf of Mexico will be Dead. The sad part of the whole mess is that if the Oil had been heading away from the U.S.and toward the south Alantic Cuba , Porta Rico.and the other Islands. The spill would be a must stop not a contain and continue to collect operation.

I really don't think most people are taking this devastation seriously enough. This is a WILDLIFE HOLOCAUST, and an ENVIRONMENTAL HOLOCAUST. All I can do is donate what money I can to help and pray. I too cannot even look at the video because even a photo of an animal in distress is too much for me as I love animals (I am a vegetarian) and am very sensitive. This is so upsetting to me - even though I am not in the immediate area - I am in NJ. The people who are responsible for this disaster should have criminal charges brought against them and be PUT TO DEATH - and even that would not be enough to make things right. I don't think there is anything that can ever make this right or make up for all the pain, torture, suffering and loss that these innocent, defenseless animals have had to experience.

Not taking anything away from the suffering of these animals due to the oil spill; but what about the suffering of farm animals raised by the big Factory Farms? The law allows animals raised for food to be treated any way the farmers see fit.
