Arizona Sen. John McCain continues to lead his Republican primary challenger, former congressman and conservative talk show host J.D. Hayworth, although his level of support is somewhat less than it was in May, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted June 16.

McCain is ahead by 47 percent to 36 percent, with little-known Republican Jim Deakin, a conservative, at 7 percent and 8 percent undecided. The margin of error is 4.5 points. In May, McCain had led 52 percent to 40 percent.

The primary is Aug. 24.

John McCain, J.D. HayworthWhile Hayworth and Deakin are challenging McCain from the right, McCain is holding his own among conservatives with 42 percent of their votes. Hayworth gets 43 percent and Deakin gets 6 percent.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

A choice between McCain & Hayworth is no choice at all really... Toss a coin and get it over with.

Not true, Jim. Keep current on the mindset. I am sure McCain believes in some sort of pathway for those who have been here for a number of years, have made their own way rather than on the taxpayer dime, have been law abiding, and have learned English, should be given consideration for their contributions to our society. I believe in securing our borders, but I do not believe in persecuting those people who have shown their devotion to making a better life in America, which translates into showing allegiance to America. Get rid of those on the government dole, those who have criminal records, etc.

They just had a segment on Fox about a Mexican drug gang that planned to blow up a dam here in the U.S. to exact revenge on a rival gang. If that doesn't prove we need to secure our southern border, and admit Arizona is right, nothing will.

How about the fire now raging in AZ? Who do you suppose is responsible for this? How much is it costing the American taxpayer to tolerate what the illegals are doing here?

Upon attending GOP rallies here in Phoenix this past month, I am hearing less and less support for McCain. Even moans and groans when his name is mentioned. I am not so sure he has the support the poll numbers indicate. McCain has disappointed many of his constituents. His advantage in this campaign is his purse. He has so much more money than Hayworth. But this year I will support Hayworth. He certainly knows now where he must stand if he is to be elected. McCain knows also but he bucks it despite what constituents want. I do not feel I can trust him anymore. Not good.

I am a Right leaning Moderate from Illinois, so you know we have our own big battles to be fought. However, I would never vote against McCain. While I don't agree with some of the positions he has taken over the years, I would trust him with my life, if it ever came to that. McCain is a keeper, who has done far more good in our Congress, than damage. I don't know much about Hayworth, but from the little I have read, and just looking at him, he reminds me of a used car salesman.

If you want the Republican party....to be significant political organization....stay away from McCain.....he is a loose cannon....votes like a Republican sometimes...votes like a Democrat the other times....McCain is already a rich man so even if he looses he is in good shape.... ANY Republican to the right of McCain is a far better choice.

Thank you, enorcel. We are in agreement. My husband is true to the core, hard shell Conservative GOP and for first time in our Arizona elections, same as me, he is NOT voting for McCain. We do not feel trust in him anymore. It is time to let the younger, enthusiastic Conservative believers have a chance at making REAL change happen. God knows we need it. I am taking my chance with Hayworth. Oh, and I want to also add, real Conservatives know there is a difference between Republican and Conservative. In our family we side with Conservative.
