Conservative lawyer Mike Lee won the Utah Republican Primary for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, capitalizing on anti-incumbent sentiment and support from the Tea Party movement. The contest will determine who will succeed three-term Sen. Robert Bennett, who was ousted at a GOP state convention last month.

Lee, who clerked for Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, defeated businessman Tim Bridgewater, who also campaigned as a conservative and also had some backing from the Tea Party folks in Utah, the Associated Press reported. Both candidates ran to Bennett's right, railing against federal spending in Washington.

Lee, 38, is lawyered up -- to say the least. He is the son of Rex Lee, solicitor general under President Reagan and the former dean of the Brigham Young University law school. Mike's brother, Tom Lee, has been nominated to the Utah Supreme Court.

Lee says he wants to cut spending, repeal the new health care law and impose term limits on lawmakers. He will face Democratic nominee Sam Granato in November.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

While I do not like the idea of ANOTHER LAWYER winning an election, I guess if we have only a few of them, along with a majority of small business owners, we will be able to move forward on a bipartisan basis. A few lawyers are okay, although if matters of law arise, there are enough of them out there for consulting, when necessary. Lawyers are the ones who make laws so convoluted that the general public cannot get their arms around their impact, and also the ones who provide the loopholes and safeguards that our body of Legislators, both State and Federal, can hang their hats on, until someone finds out what is going on. Often, it is too late.
