Obama on Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell Repeal: 'We've Never Been Closer'

President Obama told gay activists Tuesday night that "we have never been closer" to repealing the ban on permitting openly gay men and woman to serve in the U.S. military.

The House passed legislation last month that would overturn the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which requires gay members of the armed services to keep their sexual orientation private. The policy was enacted under President Clinton and replaced an outright prohibition on gays serving in the military.

Obama asserted that "forcing gay and lesbian soldiers to live a lie or to leave the military" harms national security. "We have never been closer to ending this discriminatory policy," he said in remarks at a White House reception. "And I'm going to keep on fighting until that bill is on my desk and I can sign it."

But swift passage in the Senate is not assured. Repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" passed the Armed Services Committee, 16-12, in May, with only one Republican voting in favor and one Democrat opposed. But Sen. John McCain has vowed to fight repeal on the Senate floor, and the legislation is incorporated in a larger defense bill that includes costly projects opposed by the Obama administration.

Advocates want Congress to act this year, fearing that Democratic majorities will shrink after the November election, making passage more difficult in 2011.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

I know this is an important issue to some people. I do not have a problem with this legislation. But as usual Our President is pushing through items on his campaign promise list. I would think he would be more inclined to be worried about the state of this country and coming up with ways and ideas to get things moving. In my opinion their are times he could care less about this country and care about campaigning and his political future.

I'm all for the repeal of this ridiculous law but what "National Security" is Obama talking about? This country has NO National Security right now. Everyone is free to come and go as they choose through open borders. I wish that the "we have never been closer" mantra would stretch into actual National Security as required by his job definition. The very fact that we have to consider gays in the military a "threat" while our country is being invaded by cartels and border jumpers from all countries is the upside down world of politics that this country has turned into. Let everyone serve their country and let's please get back to the basics of protecting ALL the citizens of the United States from invasion in our own Country.

Ok answer me this. Lets say they repeal this rule and gay soldier is now openly in the Army. Now its basic training and he needs to be housed, where are you going to put him? In the mens barracks where the heterosexual men have to be uncomfortable showing and being naked in front of him? I know, the gay activists willsay, "he isnt goign to rape them". I agree, he wont. So how about we put the hetero soldier in the ladies barracks then. He will be professional and wont"rapethem". Seems the same to me. Just because it sounds good doesnt mean its effective. Punishing a hetero soldier and making him uncomfortable in his home doesnt make sense to me. This is just one of many instances.

You know I served for four years duing Vietnam and we knew we had gays amoung us and in one case the commander knew it but this guy was no threat to any of us and he did his job so well no one cared one way or the other and in most cases the guys serving have no problem with it. There is always going to be one or two bigots as there were with some whites against blacks but if there is a problem then deal with that person but leave the others alone. In war as long as the soldiers are watching each others back duing the heat of battle I don't think most soldiers care one way or the other. People need to get over their stupid views and judge someone on his actions.

I doubt that many gays in the military want to tell or be asked.

It is imperative that Congress enacts a law that prohibits tacking on riders to important bills that have nothing to do with the main bill being addressed, such as is happening with the bill addressed in the article. To force Congressmen to pass a very controversial, and sometimes, a very costly pork barrel expenditure, in order to get funding where it is direly needed, is just a terrible way to scam the public and further burden the taxpayers. ONE ISSUE PER BILL. Shine the light on any, and every, ridiculous waste of taxpayer money, and pandering to demands of minority interest groups. If a bill has MERIT, it would pass Congress, without debate.
