Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

This is becoming more troubling, not because anything of vast signifigance has been revealed about Ms Kagan, but because of the SCOTUS decision handed down today that says the 2nd Amendment guarantees the right of every American has the right to own a firearm for their own protection (assuming they meant ADULTS). It was a 5/4 decision, which means Justice Sotomayor opposed upholding the 2nd, after telling Congress, during her hearings, that she agrees with the 2nd. What does this tell us about the hearings. What it tells me, is, we cannot believe what is being said today, all decisions must be based on what the nominee has embraced in the past. What his/her writings, decisions, comments, and HEROES, tell us is the true substance of the person. While I was not overly concerned with Ms Kagan gaining this lifelong seat on the Court, since the balance that now exists would not really change. What does bother me, a very great deal, is what could happen should one of our more moderate Justices should have to step down in the next 2 1/2 years. We would then be looking at a very Liberal/Progressive majority, and I do not believe the American people want that.
