Democratic Web Plan Urges Activists to Film Republicans, Hold GOP 'Accountable'

The Democratic National Committee has launched a web platform for activists to upload videos of Republican politicians' speeches, public appearances and unguarded comments, hoping to capitalize on ever-present digital cameras and smart phones to dig up embarrassing footage and audio of candidates and lawmakers.

"The Accountability Project is a volunteer platform to document Republican candidates and their public statements at local events, as well as their campaign tactics," the project's website says. "For too long, our politics has been poisoned with misinformation, lies and double-speak. The most powerful way to combat these tactics is to drag them into the light of public scrutiny."

Video has played an increasingly important role in both campaigns and policy, and recently, it has been a thorn in the side of Democratic politicians. Two weeks ago, Rep. Bob Etheridge, (D-N.C.), was confronted by two young men with a video camera on a Washington sidewalk, and had to fend off a mini-scandal from the scuffle that followed. In May, the videos of Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal's public appearances led the New York Times to report that Blumenthal, a Democratic Senate candidate, had been exaggerating his military service war record.

Video shot by activists was also influential in bringing down the liberal community group ACORN, the target of a conservative video sting earlier this year. Though ACORN has not been charged with wrongdoing, a number of its staffers were fired after being caught on tape offering questionable advice, and the organization was stripped of federal funding and has disbanded.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

History shows the incumbent party looses power in the mid-term elections. This year the faltering economy, day 7_? in the gulf, among others, has democrats facing a 2008 like perfect storm that swept an inexperienced Obama into office in the first place. Dems can take polls, they know what is coming. It seems Democrats are divine wind-like DESPERATE with this attempt to dredge up a 'macaca' moment to save a democrats skin. We'll see.

"For too long Politics has been poisoned by misinformation, lies and double-talk"...seems like that's all we get from Obama, and he is a Democrat, like all these people who are trying to catch somebody doing something wrong in the GOP. The wool is coming off of people's eyes, and they are seeing through the clothes that you wear. This "game you play" is no longer a joke...it is quite serious, and there are more of US than there are of YOU, and we want what is the best outcome for the greatest number of people, and we also want a fair playing field for the people. We do not want your socialism...We want Entrepreneurial Free Enterprise where the majority of the people either want a product or not, and that is what determines a persons income, etc. The people do not want these created wars, and to be put in prison camps, They want freedom... freedom of choice, freedom of speech, freedom from mandates on everyone!!! The people will vote for freedom!

In the Etheridge incident the Dems called this "ambush politics". Now they encourage it. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds...

I saw the video. The kids attempting to interview Etheridge where being polite. It was Etheridge who shoved them and put one in a head lock. If a republican had done that, it would've been all over the media. Last night, Hannity asked Bob Beckel if he though there was a double standard in the media. Beckel, an avid liberal, said, since you guys are my friends, there are things that I can say as a democrat that I reccommend that you not say in public. I was stunned. It's so true. Total media bias.

Gee its only what the GOP has been doing for the prior entire administration, sometimes to protect oneself you have to use their tactics, being nice with such people doesn't obviously work considering the prior 8 yr. reign of terror tactics, smear campaigns, etc.

When you're dealing with 5th Graders, at least you get the facts. With Republicans, they just keep talking and talking and bashing and fear mongering and OBSTRUCTING. We WILL be at EVERY tea party recording everything. ALL of it will be posted and then America will REALLY know what the tea party is all about. (HINT....it is about MAKING MONEY, for SARAH PALIN!) PERIOD....this has been proven. Palin has done NOTHING for this country. She HAS, however, taken 60 MILLION dollars from her supporters, and happily deposited that cash into her PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNT.

And yet, the problems in this country remain as bad as ever. Sarah, you're BUSTED, and the truth is coming out. TEA PARTY....is about to IMPLODE!!!

Dahling...it's the little pill that says "chill out".Your illusions are crossing over to delusion. If the tea party people are your personal "night of the living dead" then head for the comfy chair and turn on Ophrah. Relax ,it is all going happen anyways so you don't have to be there.

The republicans when crazy with the taxpayers credit card from 2003 through 2005. That's how they lost Congress to the democrats. Democrats only showed us that THEY CAN SPEND EVEN MORE MONEY AND MAKE AN EVEN BIGGER NATIONAL DEBT. They've done it to themselves and 2010 for democrats will be what 2006 was for republicans. We'll still have to let those who are left in D.C. after Nov. know that we're watching them and can get rid of them, too. They can get all the campaign money they want. It doesn't mean that they can BUY our votes.

Anyone, if followed around long enough, will make a slip that can be taped and used to make them look bad. What ever happened to using best policy to decide who runs the country?

Isn't this all a bit immature? Maybe if both the Dems and Reps would spend more time working and not playing 5 year old spy games, we could get something done about all the problems in this Country.
I can't believe how childish our politicians are!
