House Fails to Pass Jobless Benefits Extension, Prospects Seem Dim

The House of Representatives has fallen short in an attempt to pass a bill extending unemployment benefits for six months at a cost of $33 billion, The Hill reports. House leaders, ordering a vote Tuesday under suspended rules, couldn't get the necessary two-thirds majority to pass the emergency measure. The extension went down in mostly party line voting, but 30 Republicans supported it, and 16 Democrats went against it.

It's not dead yet. After considering a rule allowing for a second vote, the House is expected to take up the bill again on Wednesday in a roll call that would require only a simple majority.

Job seekingEven if the benefits extension does pass the House, it is unlikely to get through the Senate before the 4th of July recess. Republican senators have bristled at extending unemployment benefits, usually routine bipartisan matters, saying that the government cannot afford to offer more payments beyond those already provided for in law. In April, Sen. Tom Coburn, (R-Okla.), killed a $10 billion extension, insisting the bill would allow Congress to "borrow and steal from our kids."

Without Sen. Robert Byrd, who died Monday morning, the Senate would need three Republicans to pass the extension. Sen. Ben Nelson, (D-Neb.), has said he will vote no if the bill doesn't include tax increases or spending reductions to offset its cost. Sen. Olympia Snowe, (R-Maine), is the only Republican who has expressed support for it.

The House bill would extend unemployment benefits through November.

Senator Ben Nelson D Neb. said he would vote against the bill if it does not include tax increases or spending reductions to pay for it. That is exactly what the Republicans are saying. They want the bill passed without adding to the deficit. The Democrats are in power and it is their fault if the unemployment extension bill is not passed. The smart people know this can be done with spending reductions but Democrats don't seem to know what a spending reduction is.

If the 16 Democrats had supported this bill , it would have passed. They along with most Republicans are smart enough to know we can't continue spending before cutting Government fat first. Billions of dollars in new taxes on banks and energy will never pass either , as it only loses us millions of more jobs , and the American public end up paying every penny of all business taxes. There hasn't been a bill since this administration took office that couldn't be passed with the Democrat only vote.

The republicans have always been against everything that benefits the average working gal or guy. They are against the minimum wage, social security, health care reform, unemployment benefits.
They only support things that benefit big corporate interests whether it is Wall Street bankers, Big Oil,big insurance companies etc. They spend all their time trying to cut taxes on corporations and the wealthy, while slashing regulations on these companies

I honestly CANNOT believe the folks in Washington WANT unemployed Americans to die! THAT will offset the budget, but to slowly kill the people who put you there is unbelievable ! Tiers 1-4, (unemployment) was GREAT, but we do need a tier 5. ASAP ! Many of us relied on THAT $$ to buy medicines ( to sustain life ) food & aroof over our heads. DOES THE GOVERNMENT CARE??????? NOPE ! The Republicans are playing head games because THEY are sore loosers, and the American people are thier pawns, and are suffering dearly. I SAY NO ONE VOTE THIS COMING NOVEMBER,and let's see what happens? They are gambling with OUR lives,so let's gamble with thiers ! Washington better prepare for what I see as a MAJOR REVOLUTION happening in the future ! I hope not, but screw with peoples lives for too long, and face the consequences !!

Hey pat, our government is BROKE!!! The federal government is BROKE!!! The state government is BROKE!!! The country government is BROKE!!! So if you have to take a job at McDonalds or take 2 part time jobs, that's what you need to do. That's what I did during the Carter Administration, took 3 jobs, even though I had a small baby.

Obama needs to shut everything down and then allow only certain things to be restarted. That way he can keep a balance on what we really need and not buy a bunch of stuff we only want but don't need. For example, for thousands of years people didn't take baths. Obama should get some researchers to decide how many baths we should take. That would save a lot of water and would be within the capabilities of the energy production from green energy. The next thing Obama could do is make a law that elevators are programed to not go to the next floor. So, if you want to go up a couple of levels, you would have to walk. The elevator wouldn't go up when you push the button. That would save a lot of energy.

The Republicans in the Senate are making a joke of our government. The House voted to give the committee investigating the BP oil spill the power to force wittnesses to testify under oath. Only one member of the House voted against the bill. This morning it was introduced in the Senate and the Republicans objected and blocked it from being voted on. It seems that the oil companies are getting what they pay for.

Off shore oil leases have to be approved by Congress. Congress has been under the control of democrats since 2006. The Deep Horizon lease was approved by Congress in late 2009. The began drilling in Feb., 2010. Now, explain how this is George Bush's fault? Try researching your facts. That way they are really facts and not just stuff you made up.

One way to balance the budget it to raise taxes on the rich. They have increased the amount of our GDP they own tnanks to Reagan's "trinkle-down" economics and George W. Bush's tax cuts for the rich. The rich don't create jobs they play the Wall Street games and make more and more with their investiments.

Understand that these comments are put forth by a staunch conservative. For the last decade (at least) the Republicans and Democrats inside the beltway have together created the current economic mess, made even worse by our "spend it even though we don't have it" BHO administration. So rather than make cuts in the wasteful spending by the out of control government they choose to draw the line at helping the very people their policies put out of work. So one must ask who of these elected officials are working for the American people....my assessment is none! Wake up people...clean house in November!
