Employers Shed Jobs, Though Unemployment Rate Dips Slightly in June

Employers shed jobs last month even though the unemployment rate in the United States edged downward to 9.5 percent, according to new numbers released by the Labor Department on Friday. Non-farm payrolls decreased by 125,000 jobs, which mostly reflected the departure of temporary workers hired for the 2010 U.S. Census.

The private sector added 83,000 workers, but the decline in the jobless rate was driven by 652,000 Americans who gave up their search for employment. (Those not looking for work are not counted as unemployed.) The jobless rate was 9.7 percent in May and has hovered in that neighborhood for most of 2010.

Most of the unemployment figures remained unchanged. The number Americans who have been unemployed long-term (27 weeks or more) remained constant at 6.8 million, and the number of workers who only had part-time work, 8.6 million, changed little over the month of June. Work ended for 225,000 Census temps.

Transportation and warehousing added 15,000 jobs in June, health care employment added 9,000, and mining added 6,000. Last month's numbers added to long-term upward trends for all three industries. The largest decline in specialty trade contracting hit the construction industry, which lost 22,000 jobs. The construction industry on net has changed little over the past four months.

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rate for adult women (7.8 percent) declined, while the rates for adult men (9.9 percent), teenagers (25.7 percent), whites (8.6 percent), blacks (15.4 percent), and Hispanics (12.4 percent) showed little or no change. The jobless rate for Asians was 7.7 percent, not seasonally adjusted.

We just pay too much attention to these statistics. If no one worried about things, then everything would be alot better. Obama is doing the best he can and has an entire government to take care of us and to worry about making things better.

Mr. Sessions,

Now that is reporting. Give us the facts so we, THE CONSTITUENTS, can properly decide whether our representatives are doing what they promised to do. No more biased "reporting."

Pulsfire, you got it right as long as I was paid not to work then I did not work at A real job. I had a garden, some frute trees, helped neighbors, cut grass, worked under the table as I have the ability to fix things. I was very busy and doing just fine until the Govt. stoped paying me not to work. As I said I had to drive further than before and take A job not in my field but I found a job

I think you completely missed what pulsefire was getting at when he was clarifying your post. You are exactly what is wrong with the unemployment system. Unemployment benefits weren't created so you can get paid to not work. It was created so when you lost your job you would receive financial assistance while you were out looking for employment. Not so you can stay home and tend to a garden and plant some fruit trees. While many people work under the table and collect benefits doesn't change the fact that you commited 2 frauds. You defrauded the IRS out of tax dollars and you defrauded unemployment because you were no longer unemployed, but underemployed so you would have received less benefits. You are the reason why republicans voted down extending benefits.

As you read over this administrations fuzzy math figures on how we continue to lose more jobs , yet miraculously the unemployment rate goes down a hair , keep in mind that the lowest actual unemployment rate in the country is in Washington DC.

Unemployment statistics are the largest economic fraud ever perpetrated, and that's including Bernie Madoff. First, they're based on people actively searching for jobs and collecting unemployment compensation. When unemployment compensation runs out for someone, they're no longer counted as one of the unemployed. They become "non-persons" as far as the Department of Labor is concerned. Unemployment statistics don't count the people perennially on welfare. You can't be unemployed if you never were employed. Employment statistics are another mater. BO was so happy when employment went up by several hundred thousand because of the addition of temporary census workers. When those workers were finished (laid off, fired, whatever) they did NOT join the ranks of the unemployed. They didn't work long enough to get unemployment insurance. So, technically speaking, BO increased employment by those several hundred thousand jobs and, when everything was over, didn't increase UNemployment. Just a thought.

President Obama is doing an excellent job. He is calmly and methodically trying to correct all of the problems he inherited. People need to be patient. It doesn't help That FOX NEWS and many on talk radio constantly distort the news and are hoping that he fails.

We don't need to hope that he fails. He already has.

AS much as i would like to see this economy turn around iam afraid it will get much worse before it gets better. Low paying and part time jobs wont feed a revival in the job market. Cutting taxes at this time is the worst thing we can do if we dont cut spending to the bone .That means we eliminate medicare or social security or both.I bet their be a envasion of washington by seniors and their children long before that happens.Leaving only military complex and the two wars to cut. Cant see the republicans letting that happen. My solution would be to raise taxes significantly on the top 5 percent[wont change their life style] Put a tax on all goods[not raw material] entering usa put a penaty tax on all corporations whos product is manufactured overseas[ as there manufacturing their product overseas contributes to our unemployment.raise the roalty tax on oil Declair victory in iraq and leave[no alquida no saddam]Same with Afganistan[ no bin laden no significant noumber of alquida]Create and put in place a plan to have high speed rail between all major cities.

You started fine but went downhill fast. Eliminating social security doesn't work. People paid into it with the expectation that they would get the money back when they retired. Same with medicare, although weeding out fraud and the ungodly amount of required government regulation would help. Cutting out the two wars is a thought IF we make it very plain that we're leaving because we're tired of the Afghan and Iraqui BS and unwillingness to do for themselves. We've helped you- now it's YOUR turn. Raising taxes on the top 5% doesn't do squat. If I bring home 5% less then I'll SPEND 5% less. The new Caddy or Lincoln doesn't get bought this year and the UAW can cry all it wants about automotive job losses. Taxing imports only makes them more expensive but doesn't create new jobs. It just gives the government more money to squander. Raising taxes on oil is counterproductive. First, the oil companies would only pass the taxes to the user, resulting in higher gasoline and diesel prices, making goods more expensive by making them more expensive to ship. Industries depending on oil as a raw material (what are plastics made of?) would have to raise their prices, making them less competitive in the world market. Washington, however, would have even more money to squander and tell us what a great job they're doing.

Wolfsonny have you ever heard of Smoot-Hawley, a protectionist buy American trade bill passed by Hoover that many say helped trigger a 1929 recession into a full blown Great Depression??
Evidently Obama has not either judging by the buy American provisions in his stimulus bill.
BTW the top 5% no longer have enough money to pay down the deficit Obama has racked up.
Obama's debt commission KNOW yet another "tax the rich" scheme is not going to make a significant difference in light of the MASSIVE Obama spending. The debt commission are well aware of this and it is EXACTLY why they are expected to recommend a VAT tax EVERYONE will pay on nearly everything. Then Dems will pass legislation to exempt their democrat voting supporters just as they have done with the "Cadillac Tax" on "Gold Plated" health care plans for their party member union buddies.

Add all those on welfare and those that will be applying for welfare and you are looking at better than 25% unemployment.
Mark my word this is the first stage of DEPRESSION thanks to Obama and no Job Stimulus plan.
He will spend, spend and spend more.
The war fund is nothing but a fund to give out more money to stupid programs such as 3 billion to Haiti,etc...
Obama is Not a Leader!!!

No mention of the 650,000 people who have been unemployed so long they have dropped off the Governments stats??? With the long term unemployed who have given up looking for a job the TRUE unemployment rate is near 17%.
Obama told us if we passed the stimulus unemployment would drop and not exceed 8%. Obama sold us the stimulus by saying if we did NOTHING unemployment would hit and hold above 9%. Turns out we have had unemployment way above 9% but Obama is playing fast and loose with the numbers to hold the "offical" unemployment rate under double digits.....how long was it 9.9%????

What exactly did we get for nearly ONE TRILLION DOLLARS in stimulus and jobs bill if Obama, just a year ago, told us if we did NOTHING unemployment would hold above 9%??????????
We got a few paved roads (4% of spending) What Obama got was hundreds of billions for a political slush fund to hand out to Democrat voting unions.
