Americans Split on Immigration Reform Priorities

President Obama last week renewed a call to make a priority of immigration reform that would tighten border security while providing a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. A USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted before that speech but released Tuesday, finds Americans split between which of those two goals of reform is more important.

Fifty percent say halting the flow of illegal immigrants into the U.S. should take priority while 45 percent want emphasis on developing a plan to deal with immigrants now in the country illegally, according to the survey conducted June 11-13. Five percent were undecided. In 2006, 52 percent thought halting the flow of illegal immigration was the most important objective, while 43 percent said it was dealing with illegals already in the country.

Sixty-seven percent of Republicans consider stopping illegal immigration most important while 29 percent put emphasis on finding a plan to deal with illegals already here. Independents are split at 47 percent citing the need to stop illegal immigration while 46 percent want a way to deal with current illegals. Democrats put the priority on developing a plan for dealing with current illegals by 55 percent to 33 percent.

Barack ObamaIn his speech, Obama said he supported an approach similar to a proposal by New York Sen. Charles Schumer and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham which combines increased border-tightening and enforcement measures with a plan under which illegal immigrants would admit they broke the law, pay fines and back taxes, provide they can speak English and then put in applications for legal permanent residency. However, they would start at the back of the immigration line.

Sixty-two percent of those surveyed believe illegal immigrants have cost taxpayers too much by their use of government services like education and medical care while 32 percent say they pay their fair share of taxes, with 7 percent undecided. That view has been fairly consistent since 2006.

As far as efforts to build a head of steam again to make immigration reform a priority, the public puts it about midway down the list of issues that they see as serious threats to U.S. well-being. Topping that list of threats, cited by percentages all in the 80s, are the federal deficit, unemployment, terrorism and health care costs. Immigration comes in sixth at 64 percent.

When Americans are asked to spontaneously rank the seriousness of the issue, as opposed to selecting from a list of issues, only 5 percent cite illegal immigration.

That squares with analyses by the Pew Research Center which said that, at the beginning of 2009, only 41 percent said illegal immigration should be a top priority for the president and the new Congress. During the 2008 presidential campaign, 49 percent said it was a "very important" issue.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. illegals shoud be given a work permit valid for 3 years, at the same time we get to check their police record and every 3 years thereafter. also they would receive social security after 40 quarters and the right to go back and forth across the border.

First of all, deport every one with a rap sheet. Second the people that for generation have been living one way or the other on social services, getting money, year after year. Third, gang members, all of them. Them it will be easy to evaluate the rest that have been here living an honest and hard working life.

Ronald Reagan had the right approach when he granted amnesty as part of comprehensive immigration reform.

Reagan was mistaken. The current situation is proof...

I cant beleive people would consider amnesty, if you say its o.k. to stay and we forgive you.what does amnesty say to 50 million more mexicans wanting in? If I were a mexican I would try harder to get in and wait my turn for the next amnesty. I can not beleive people are so darn stupid.illegals are breaking the law and draining our country of everything.I cant beleive we would consider amnesty for these criminals......

Split? I think drake needs to get a wider range of respondents other than his liberal cronies to try and even things up. This poll is a crock. More than 50% want illegal;s out, period.

There is an illegal employer problem not an illegal alien problem. There are laws on the books, e verify, that will handle this problem. Bush spend millions, handing it out to his military industrial complex, to seal the border. California and Texas has done a good job, but Arizona has not. The economic reason they are coming here is NAFTA and the WTO.

The catholic church supports comprehensive immigration reform. The church does not want to see parents deported while their children who are American citizens remain here without them. We cannot tear families apart. Support comprehensive reform with a compassionate path to citizenship.

simple question, for a very long time, we as a nation have LOST most of our jobs as being either shipped overseas as wage issues and or just plain conditions favor the employer to export his business.. first we have had this sector of the population for more then some 300 yrs, first it was the Afro-American as slaves, the Chinese as Railroad constrution, and migrant workers even displaced whites and others from the Great Depression seeking ANY EMPLOYMENT out there, as Americans..those who claim to be ones who are decendent of those who came across from Europe or other as well as from CUBA,Latin American,Middle and Far East, have come here to attempt as history shows...MAKE IT....Ive seen how we react, but we stand and do nothing but complain..as our nations good jobs are taken away,as shipped overseas,or made as such we cant compete with other lands labor costs..we want our toys,we want our life style, but what have we done to keep it....I lost my job for medical reasons,i won my compensation cases, ive fought as a veteran, and raised one child who now has her own, they were forced to live with us as their landlord decided to sell their rental as not to want to maintain its integrety as cost to repair, but its now sold and is being replaired..they wont get it back. Thus i ask all Americans do we decide to become what we loave or just survive as we have been til when.....
