Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle Vetoes Same-Sex Partners Benefits Bill

After much thought, Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle says she found her state's civil unions benefits bill to be "essentially same-sex marriage by another name." So on the final day allowed for her to sign the legislation into law or veto it, she chose the latter.

Lingle, a Republican, said Tuesday, "There has not been a bill that I have contemplated more or an issue I have thought about more deeply" in nearly two terms as governor, the Associated Press reported. "But I have been open and consistent in my opposition to same-sex marriage." The rejected legislation granted gay men and lesbian couples the same benefits from the state as those afforded married couples.

Hawaii would have been the sixth state to recognize civil unions and offer benefits; five states and the District of Columbia have legalized same-sex marriage.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Exactly what is it that the other so-called citizens are paying for? Could it be the right to have one's life partner have access to social security benefits, like married people have? Could it be one or some of the other many, many legal and financial rights that are associated with marriage? My partner and I, who have been together in a committed, monogamous relationship for 27 years, contacted an attorney to determine what we need to do in order to protect ourselves and our assets should something happen to one of us. Guess what? In order to complete and file the necessary documents to give us most of the same protections that married people automatically enjoy will cost us north of $5,000. How many of you can honestly say that is fair?

gcsimp1 The form of religion and love you spout is not the kind I believe in. My bible teaches me to love people and not discriminate. Do you happen to recall a passage that says "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"? You and the other so-called religious people who want to decide who gets what rights and who is living according to God's will are so bigoted and hypocritical that it is very, very sad, and I feel very sorry for you. You, too, will be judged one day, and boy,oh,boy, do you have some explaining to do!

If you think issues involving same-sex & Gov. Lingle have been put to bed, think again.

As an agnostic, I don't see where God fits into this. I also don't see where it has to be "marriage". Gays and lesbians compare this to the civil rights and desegregation for blacks. It took some time for people to accept that change. It's not like it only took a year or two and it was done, it was a century after the civil war. Why can't the gays and lesbians accept "Civil Unions" for now and continue to lobby for "marriage" if they feel the need to? The "Civil Union" gives them the ability to get insurance together, be claimed as next of kin and allows the courts to make decisions in case of a breakup. As a twice married and twice divorced heterosexual, marriage isn't easy and divorce is even worse. Marriage isn't anything like you grow up thinking it would be.

If people don't recognize "civil unions" they are forcing the whole country to support an elder member who has been in a commited union [not recognized] whose partner has died and left millions but hasn't made out a will or whose greedy relatives challenge it. That means WE are going to have to take care of that person who is most likely having legal and physical problems caused by their union not being "legal".
Case in point, those extra "wives" of plural marriages who are taking welfare and living in a very pleasant well stocked home with a well - to - do not recognized by law "husband".

Refreshing to see a politician who values traditional marriage, the cornerstone of our society,in the face of america's decline into hedonism and political correctness. Too bad so few have values consistent with the principles that made our country great, and made us the envy of the world.

It's good to know that people can still opt for morality. Jesus, we're in your hands.

Why if you are an American citizen do you not believe in civil rights? Yes, I do believe in God and I believe He or She or even It will judge the morality of this issue.

It is sad that Gov. Lingle thinks she has the right to punish and deny insurance benefits to those who do not share her own personal religious beliefs. It is this very type of forced intolerence and repression which led freedom-loving people to leave Europe for a new world.

Does Gov. Lingle not fear that someday the very God she worships might deny her the benefit of heaven because of her own narrow-mined intolerence? As a Christian, it is my belief that if homosexuality is wrong, God will take care of that issue. I doubt God needs my assistance in this matter.
