Obama Hits Low Point in Approval by Independents

President Obama's job-approval rating among independents dropped below 40 percent for the first time during the last 12 months, according to a Gallup poll conducted June 28-July 4.

Obama had the approval of 56 percent of independents in July 2009, a number that slipped to 44 percent this spring and now is at 38 percent in Gallup's latest tracking poll.

In the 2008 presidential race, Obama won with the help of a 52 percent to 44 percent margin among independents, according to exit polls.

The changed sentiment among independents has surfaced in some (though not all) state polls as well. For instance, in the bellwether state of Ohio, where voters overall now disapprove of Obama's performance by 49 percent to 45 percent, independents disapprove by 53 percent to 40 percent, according to a recent Quinnipiac University poll. The balance are undecided.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Of course, it depends on who they're really polling. I'm a true independent, and in the last couple of years I've run into dozens of so-called independents who I know are closet Republicans who backed Bush vehemently pre-Obama.

Could someone tell me where the 38% are located? I kee hearing that they are still in favor of this president, but I never hear any of those people's comments.
Are they just too embarassed to admit it?

If he keeps up his nonsense about the border, Obama will bring new definition to the words "low marks."

Yeah the Harvard faculty is going to run the country now. I don't think the independents expected that.

Considering the hatchet job FOX NEWS and much of TALK RADIO do on him every day his numbers are holding fairly steady.

Does this sound like steady numbers? "Obama had the approval of 56 percent of independents in July 2009, a number that slipped to 44 percent this spring and now is at 38 percent in Gallup's latest tracking poll". Looks like a steady decline.

Geez andrc657, that's one TV network and just a couple of radio stations. The rest of them faun over him. Bush got more criticism from the lame main stream media and his numbers didn't drop like Obama's have.

His ratings will continue at these low points with all parties and may dip even further as time goes on. This country is not and has never been this left of center in it's history. Carter tried to pull us left and look where it got him. One reason FDR was so popular was because he was a brilliant war time leader. His social policies are still haunting us though.
