New Claims for Unemployment Benefits Drop, Hit Lowest Level in Two Months

A little good news for the so-called Recovery Summer: The Labor Department said Thursday that first-time claims for unemployment benefits dropped by 21,000 last week -- a sign that layoffs could be slowing, with new claims at their lowest level since early May.

Even so, 454,000 Americans filed initially for jobless benefits during the week that ended July 3, the government said, and populous eastern states like New Jersey, Massachusetts, New York and Florida saw increases in new claims.

In addition, the Associated Press said some 350,000 people lost jobless benefits during the week of June 19, when Congress failed to reach agreement on legislation extending emergency unemployment insurance.

The report on new jobless claims "is good news," the global banking concern BNP Paribas said in a note to clients, but "it would need to be followed up by several more weeks to suggest a pickup in hiring."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

If the economy is "recovering" so well as Obama claims, why did he want to extend unemployment benefits?...

I am glad that new unemployment claims are dropping, but are we so desperate for good news that PD has to put in that they are at the lowest levels in two months? The media will say or print anything that makes things look good for this president. I wonder how low his approval ratings would be if most media outlets told the truth about our economy.

To our liberal friends,
Listen you guys got your "DREAM TEAM" elected....
Did you forget that someone ACTUALLY has to know what their doing when they get there.
So as every day goes by ,the libs and the dems lose more and more of the indys and the middle because promises are easy to make and hard to keep.
So here's the deal....take your medicine...you screwed up and bet on the wrong horse
You bet the rent money now its time to face the facts...in less than 4 months the piper will be paid.... and it's gonna be a sizable bill....I'd start looking for a soup kitchen ...because your feet will be meeting the street.
Next time try thinking things through before you plan to take over the American public.

More "creative book keeping" by the administration. Could it be because thousands have given up looking for work?...

The stimulus plan is slowly working but there are still many unemployed people who need to continue receiving benefits. It is disgraceful that the republicans are blocking these benefits.

You're right the stimulus is slowy working. At this rate we should be at pre-stimulus unemployment numbers in about 25 YEARS !!!

Republicans are not 'blocking' anything. In fact the GOP offered to pass the bill as soon as Dems pay for just a portion of it. How shocking that our government actually pay for anything instead of just printing money until our nation collapses on its own debt to itself!

Something for nothing..With over sixty million americans addicted to receiving compensation for doing nothing..It will indeed be a hard chain to break..

apparently dan you have not lost your job. My husband has been jobless for 1 year, in that year he has sent over 150 resumes to potential employers with little to no response. Companies are not hiring because banks are not lending and when they do consider a loan the requirements are so high that people will not qualify. I do think that anyone collecting umemployment benefits should have to show proof that they have looked for work, think of the people who could find jobs checking on umemployment benefits - if you don't look for a job, you don't get the benefits.

The government doesn't "make" any money or profit - it only has taxes and increasing taxes to work with - or printing money of little value. So, I'm sure you are willing to pay more in taxes to help pay for all of this.

why not show the total, instead of the margin? typical misrepresentation of the beat writer with nothing to say and trying to create news.

Expect more and more of these fuzzy math stories on unemployment with only 117 days until mid term elections.
