Justice Lawsuit Challenging Arizona Immigration Law Gets Negative Marks from Public

The Justice Department's lawsuit challenging Arizona's law cracking down on illegal immigrants draws a mostly negative reaction from Americans, according to a Gallup poll conducted July 7.

Fifty percent oppose the lawsuit, with 38 percent saying they "strongly" oppose it, while 33 percent support it, with 17 percent undecided.

The lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of the Arizona measure, saying that immigration laws and policies are a federal prerogative. The Justice Department sought an injunction to prevent Arizona's law from going into effect on July 29 as scheduled.

Seventy-nine percent of Republicans oppose the Justice Department action as do 56 percent of independents. Fifty-six percent of Democrats support it.

Illegal immigrationMost national polls show that a majority of Americans favor the law passed by Arizona which requires police and other law enforcement officials, while enforcing other laws, to question a person's immigration status upon "reasonable suspicion" that they are in the state illegally.

A Gallup poll in late April said that 51 percent of Americans who had heard about the law supported it, and a Pew Research Center survey conducted in early May said 59 percent approve.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. This lawsuit is a disgrace to our country. Mr. President, you was elected to this office to uphold the laws of this country and protect our constitution. To which you have done neither. I keep hearing these people saying that this law in Arizona is a violation of the constitution. The Constitution only covers American Citizens, not illegals! If you wish to become a legal citizen do it by the law,not just come trespassing through our country. This idea of Obama wanting to give them amenisty is only Political for election reasons. This would be discrimination to all of the men, women, and children who came here the legal way. This administration won't go to the Arizona border because they would have to face the truth. It's time for this President to get off the campaign trail and do his job, protect our country or turn in your resignation.

Many people come here legally and don't go home. Border fences will not solve this problem. We need comprehensive immigration reform which will allow us to find out who is here, decriminalize their status if appropriate, and then decide on issues like visas, working papers, id cards and in some cases citizenship.

This written history as to the outcome of the Mexican-American War:
As late as 1880 the "Republican Campaign Textbook" by the Republican Congressional Committee[63] described the war as "Feculent, reeking Corruption" and "one of the darkest scenes in our history - a war forced upon our and the Mexican people by the high-handed usurpations of Pres't Polk in pursuit of territorial aggrandizement of the slave oligarchy."

To end the dispute with the borders I say, in all fairness, give all 6 Southwest states conquered by the United States back to Mexico. That should end the 'illegal Mexicans' who cross the borders.

You can-not be serious..You see they are here for the benefits..not neccasarially the conquest of any one state...When one states budget dries up..its off to the next..That..and it is much safer here than where they came from..this is only temporary..

I bet you Arizona's unemployment rate will go down. Since our government won't enforce Immigration laws, maybe the states should. Our judicial system and prisons in my state are overwellemed with illegals and I get to pay for thier food, medical,,,,etc. I don't feel sorry for them...send them HOME.

The federal lawsuit against Arizona is a waste of both time and money. If the federal government had been more diligent enforcing the existing immigration laws in the first place Arizona wouldn't have done something so extreme. Besides, the federal government should be as quick to fix the massive BP oil mess in the Gulf instead of fighting law abiding Americans in another state.
