Religion is an issue as well, as it often is: Chelsea, 30, is the daughter of a social justice Methodist (Hillary) and a Bible-quoting Southern Baptist (Bill), and Mezvinsky, 32, was raised in Conservative Judaism, a major Jewish movement that discourages intermarriage and forbids rabbis to officiate at -- or even attend -- interfaith weddings in which the non-Jewish spouse does not convert. I am just glad they are happy. Two mice people from nice families and just lovely.

There are journalists that like to write pieces that will provoke thoughtful dialogue. There are journalists that write articles to advance their own personal beliefs. There are journalists that write articles to bebase other's beliefs. And then it appears to me, there are journalists who, like the idiot who shouts fire into a crowded room just to see the reactions of those inside, this journalist has simply written an incindary piece using the Clinton Nuptuals as a cover and then has stepped back to see how many people's "buttons" he has pushed. Read some of the "headlines" of his other recent articles to the right of this "news" article. Might Mr. Gibson be having a big belly laugh at all commentors expenses? Debate that if you will.

What is basically unfortunate is that today's society has little identification with Judaism as we know it even though it has a rich culture and history.

Bottom line, why does this couple need to have ANY faith take part in this legal union?
This is a personal matter which should be left between the couple. Besides the fact, why should Chelsea convert, anyway?

July 15 2010 at 7:31 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyAccording to Torah law, a person's Jewishness is not a matter of life-style or self-perception: one may be totally unaware of one's Jewishness and still be a Jew, or one may consider himself Jewish and observe all the precepts of the Torah and still not be a Jew. Only Chelsea and Marc really know what motivated them to be together as partners regardless of their religious commitments.
As for the Jewish part that is in this picture--it is the relationship between the Jew and his Creator that defines his Jewishness -- not his acknowledgment of this relationship or his actualization of it in his daily life. It is not the observance of Torah's mitzvot (Divine "commandments") that makes him a Jew, but the commitment that the mitzvot represent.
Only in the beginning of the Industrial Age did Jews go for the golden ring in various countries that outlawed anyone not a Christian, to hold office or vote or attend universities they invented the word "orthodox". Since then, many people not religious have tried to tell the Torah-True Jews what to believe. Even the well-known Israeli, of England, had to convert to become their prime minister, but remained a Jew nevertheless. You cannot erase your Jewish soul with baptism water or by living as a Hindu hermit or becoming a Mormon. Your Jewish soul is a gift through your mDNA. There are no missionaries from Judaism that go around telling you to be "saved" from a Christian or Muslim permanent "hell" that doesn't exist in the Hebrew Bible. As for heaven or the World-to-Come, Jews have always taught God-Fearers that ALL righteous have a share in it regardless of race, creed, disability, color, or gender. You don't have to convert to any religion to be righteous. Even today, modern God-Fearers live by the Noah Covenant as deists without converting to Judaism but work alongside Jews among the earliest of synagogues, as many of America's Founding Fathers were deists.
So if Ms. Clinton has been studying Torah for a time or whatever, it is between her and her future husband and God. Whatever her husband does will not change the fact that he will still have a Jewish soul (neshoma) regardless of any transgression he does (God forbid). The simple meaning of these words is that a Jew is still a Jew despite his transgressions. But on a deeper level, it is because he has transgressed that he is a Jew. A non-Jew who eats leavened bread on Passover has no moral or spiritual significance. But for a Jew, the mitzvot of Passover are a component of his relationship with God: by observing them he is realizing this relationship and extending it to his daily life; if he violates them, God forbid, he is transgressing -- he is acting contrary to the commitment which defines his identity. Thus, in a certain sense, the fact of a Jew's transgression is no less an expression (albeit a negative one) of his relationship with the Almighty than his observance of a mitzvah or commandment.
See "Chabad" website for "What Makes a Jew Jewish?"also "1stCovenant" website for modern God-Fearers. We can only guess or gossip about Judaism when it comes to the final days of the wedding.
For the Jewish People, It is a standing commandment by Jehovah God in the Mosaic Laws, they are not to marry outside their nationality nor religion. If you read about Solomon and all his wives and concubines, who incidentally were from other countries and of various cults, you will find what happened to him and the country of Israel. Because of his disobedience to the law, the Davidic kingdom line was broken until the time that the King of Kings, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God, descends from heaven and claims His Kingdom and sits on the throne of David, in the city of Jerusalem. This law still is still in effect today and should be enforced by teaching within the Jewish communities where ever they may be.
