A majority of Americans say President Obama's economic program has had no effect on them personally and do not believe that the economic stimulus program has had an impact, according to a CBS News poll conducted July 9 -12. (See story; see complete poll results).

They also continue to be gloomy about the current state of the economy -- 48 percent say it has stayed about the same, 26 percent believe it has worsened, 25 percent see it getting better -- and 51 percent believe that the effects of the recession will still be felt more than two years from now.

Sixty-three percent saw no effect on them personally as a result of the administration's economic policies, 23 percent say they have hurt and 13 percent say they have helped. The percentage of those who believe those policies have helped is the same as it was in May.

EconomyFifty-six percent say the $787 billion economic stimulus program passed last year has had no impact on the economy (up from 44 percent in April), 23 percent believe the stimulus package has made things better (down from 32 percent in April) and 18 percent say it has made things worse.

Fifty-two percent say Obama has spent too little time on the economy while 33 percent say he has spent the right amount with 8 percent undecided. Overall, 54 percent disapprove of his handling of the economy and 40 percent approve, compared to June when 48 percent disapproved and 45 percent approved.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. From early on, the Obama administration said this will be something of a "jobless" recovery, and this was the intent. You will not get the jobs you went for in past. The idea is to give the unemployed small benefits until enough people have been squeezed for a long enough period of time, and then you will SCREAM for those low paying "green jobs" and "3 month certificates" that will allow you to enter the healthcare field. This is the plan, and why people do not understand it, I have no answer.

Watching your neighborhood fall into disrepair with bank owned houses, closed signs on businesses, losing your job, having your hours cut, the schools are cutting teachers, school days and programs, unable to get a loan, and this admin says things are getting better? The disconnect from the American people and real lives is stunning. Get off AF1 and start talking to real business owners, real people and see what your ideology is doing.Americans are scared of the future and what more is coming.

We Americans really have short memories. It took the Republicans 8 years to bring the country to the brink of collapse and about three hours after Obama took control everyone was screaming why has'nt he done something about the economy?
I am not a farmer but I do know one cannot make a gourmet meal out of manure (failed Republican policies). Manure must be cured, than spread over the fields then you may grow crops for that meal. A little patience please, all the indicators seem to be headed in the right direction. The only bad thing that could happen is in the mid-term elections the electorate cleans house and gives Obama a house that will let him accomplish nothing.

Americans as a whole are really shortsighted, they have already forgot that the economy almost went over the cliff, and since it didn't, the crash was negated or didn't effect them. Now they want instant fixes, well the're not any. If deregulation and tax cuts would save us why did we all get laid off in 07 and 08. and why haven't we been rehired taxes are down and you even get a tax break for hiring. No, everybody wants a return to an economy where we bought junk we didn't need with money we didn't have, from foriegn workers. You can't raise tarrifs on countries that fueled your boom because you sold them a trillion dollars in bonds which they could sell and tank our economy. If your really serious about creating jobs, go spend all your money and charge on american made goods or sit back and the economy will recover in it's own good time when things finally balance to the new economy.

It's truly a shame that the same number of people didn't see through Obama's fantastic speeches as can now see he has no idea what he is doing. As a debater Obama has no equal, on a campain trail he has no equal, as a President he is a walking, breathing disaster. Obama has a million therories and he has some great speech writers, but not a clue what's going on. Bush was a lousy President, Obama is worse.

I don't begrudge my wealthy friends their mansions, yachts or private planes. However I do not agree with the republicans that we should give them more tax cuts. I support President Obama and the democratic plan to give the tax cuts to the middle class instead.

I always find you people amazing. Here in my state, the largest Home State Bank has just opened a small office in the next state. They have now declared this small office their corp. head quarters. The reason, that state has no income tax. So, our state has now lost the income tax from this bank. A freind of mine retired, sold his house, bought a motor home, regestered it in a No Income Tax State and now all he pays is regestration on his motor home and pays no property tax or income tax. One of the reasons California is in trouble is because their richest residents and companies have moved out of state because of the high taxes. It's cheaper to own more than one house and only visit the one in California, than to live in the one in California. What Democrats seem to forget is how easy money is moved and how easy people can move. There are lots of banks off shore that love money, no questions asked. Democrats keep feeding people the old line they will get more money out of the rich and people want to believe them, but in reality they get very little from the rich and those believers get to make up the difference.

andrc657...I don't have wealthy friends just middle class working friends. I see lots of suffering for the middle class with lack of jobs, huge government debt, loss of value in homes etc. Loss of home values mostly caused by Fannie/Freddie. The only entity not included in the financial reform.

Mr. President the solution is in the tariff schedules. Have one of your aides run over to the printing office and pick up a copy. Eliminate the middle column, raise the first column to six per cent and voila, the country's troubles are over. No taxes for American business, no income taxes. Its so simple. If Americans want foreign goods let them pay the 5-8 per cent. Remember Revenue Sharing???
