Gulf Coast Residents Still Support Oil Drilling Despite Spill, Poll Finds

Despite the significant economic, environmental and emotional toll of the BP oil spill, residents of the Gulf Coast still overwhelmingly support off-shore drilling, according to a new poll.

Three-quarters of respondents in a ABC News-Washington Post survey released Wednesday said drilling should resume at its existing level, or be expanded. And by a margin of 60-38 percent, residents of Gulf states are against the six-month moratorium on drilling ordered Monday by the White House.

This poll was based on results among 1,288 respondents nationally and from an extra sample of randomly selected residents of the 22 most affected counties along the Gulf, from Cameron Parish, La., east to Gulf County, Fla., ABC said. The survey has a 3.5-point error margin for the full sample, 6.5 points for the Gulf Coast sample.

Fully 55 percent of residents in the area, which is heavily dependent on the oil industry, said the spill has had a "strongly negative" impact on the economy. One in four reported personal financial damage.

The effect has not been simply economic: One in three has been depressed in the past few days because of the spill, ABC said, and 40 percent said they were angry about it.

When it comes to rating the response to the spill, 82 percent said BP has done a bad job. A majority was unhappy with the federal government's reaction, with 72 percent rating it negatively. In sharp contrast, more than six in 10 residents rated their local and state governments' responses positively.

President Obama took a hit for his handling of the spill. Only 24 percent of Gulf residents approve of the president's response, compared with his 41 percent approval nationally.

The poll revealed sharp political divisions that weren't limited to the spill, according to ABC:

"Residents of these Gulf counties also were 8 to 16 points less apt to approve of Obama's performance across a range of other issues. Republican House candidates lead Democrats by a 21-point margin in these counties (it's a dead heat nationally). And residents of the affected counties were 16 points more apt than all Americans to say they'd like to see the Republican Party take control of Congress.

"Some of this is purely partisan: Fifty-five percent of residents in the affected Gulf Coast counties are either Republicans or independents who lean toward the Republican Party."

BP began a critical pressure test Wednesday on a temporary cap on the damaged well that has been gushing oil into the Gulf since April. Efforts to cap the well were delayed for about a day when the federal government asked for further analysis of its approach to installing a new cap. Administration officials were concerned the operation would put put too much pressure on the broken well, making the leak worse.

Meanwhile, despite two court setbacks and protests in the region that the work-stoppage will kill jobs, the Obama administration is fighting to maintain a moratorium on deep-water offshore drilling. On Monday, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar issued a new moratorium that is not based on water depth but rather on the type of rig or floating facility used for deep-sea drilling activities. If it survives legal scrutiny, the ban will remain in effect until Nov. 30.

We don't have to drill for oil at all. The Gulf of Mexico IS oil. Just dip a hose into it and "presto" you can pump oil right out. If billions of gallons of oil are sitting around for free, why is gas $2.55 a gallon ?....Al-

Gulf hydrocarbon extraction means reliable, domestically-produced fuel of very compelling energy density. Of course, should we arbitrarily decide to shun our own sources, we are "free" to spend billions to buy from our neighbors or "invest" in economically disastrous solar and wind at, to quote the President, "skyrocketing" prices.
We have little power to solve ANY technological problem if deprived of energy.

Could it be these are the best paying jobs available in this perfect example of a Red State?

I have never seen ABC/Washington Post give such a comprehensive disclaimer to its own poll, siting the political demographics of the region in detail. While I think this transparency is laudible, I would encourage them to supply such detail the next poll where a left wing outcome occurs.

Will these Gulf residents saying DRILL,DRILL,DRILL be screaming for the federal government to clean up the next environmental disaster. Let's find out what happened with the BP spill and make sure we know how to contain future spills before we proceed.

If anyone ever wants to understand why Americans are so confused, so misled, so misinformed and so divided, just read the right wing posts here on politics daily and you;ll get it. I would have never believed that an American would allow themselves to be so hoodwinked and fooled. Just like the post that refers to Obama shutting off thousands of families by shutting off offshore DRILLING. Thats absurd and a total lie. There are over 3600 wells in the Gulf pumping oil everyday. They do not stop. Now the reality if you lose the right wing Bobby Jindahl spin, there are approximately 36 Americans involved in the drilling of new wells in the Gulf. Just more right wing spin, misinformation and a transparent grab for power off of the very mess they created.

Yes and kids like candy too. And loggers like to cut down tree's. Doesnt matter, let the Gulf coast residents chose a career that doesnt involve us having to clean up the messes and bail out the corporations that are running our country via these corrupt red state special interest groups/ politicians. No matter what BP ends up paying which wont be much we tax payers are going to have to pay for this mess just like we did Wall Street and there is only one party to blame for that deregulation and thats the republicans.

I don't understand how Gulf residents can still be ok with offshore drilling. When I think about the long term consequences it just doesn't make sense. If the leak was stopped right now the oil that's already in the environment is going to wreak havoc for decades. There isn't going to be anymore money because there isn't going to be any sustainable industries related to the ocean (other than drilling for more oil). Humans can find other jobs and we can find other sources of fuel. If the decision is made to allow offshore drilling to continue, there needs to be strict, and I mean STRICT, safety regulations. Every possible scenario had better be figured out and a solution to every possible problem had better be known. It is disgusting to see all this greed and selfishness; all of which revolves around money. The short term benefits are nothing, and I mean nothing, compared to the long term consequences of this leak.
