Immigration: Texas, Arizona to Skip Border State Meeting With Mexican Counterparts

A meeting of governors from both sides of the U.S. border with Mexico will go forward in late September, but it's got a new venue and the governors of Arizona and Texas say they'll skip the event.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said he would host the border meeting in Santa Fe after Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer called off the previously scheduled meeting in Phoenix when Mexican officials said they would boycott in protest of Arizona's new immigration law. Now Brewer and Texas Gov. Rick Perry apparently intend to bypass Santa Fe in September.

"Obviously, all border governors are welcome and encouraged to attend, although the governors of Arizona and Texas have said they are not interested in joining a dialogue with their border colleagues," Richardson spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said, according to the Associated Press.

The Arizona law requires police, while enforcing other laws, to question a person's immigration status upon "reasonable suspicion" that they are in the state illegally. It is is set to take effect on July 29, although it is under challenge in a U.S. District Court in Phoenix.

The Mexican governors, protesting the law, suggested in June that the conference be moved to another state. And so it was.

Governors from the Mexican states of Coahuila, Chihuahua, Nuevo Leon, Sonora, Tamaulipas, and Baja, Calif., are expected to attend. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has also said he will be in Santa Fe. The meetings provide a forum for discussion and debate of environmental concerns, water rights, international trade and border violence.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

if a child is born in the USA to a US father and Mexican mother, that child cannot attend school in Mexico if the father dies and the mother moves back to mexico. Wonder how that would work in the US. Here we educate all and give welfare to boot.

Agreed, it is a total double standard across the board. We are expected to be all things at all times for all that come here in the U.S. and if we deviate in any way we are slammed for it....the 14th amendment has been twisted in defense of those that come here and have babies as an anchor. Our leaders are to blame.

So may opinions, so many misses. This is about socio-economics and education. Help Mexico become a healthy, industrialized country, with good paying jobs, and people will stop crossing the border ilegally. Instead, our own American Corporations take advantage of loose environmental protections, and lack luster labor laws allowing for the cheapest of labor and materials continuing to feed the epidemic most of you are pissed about. It's not that people don't want to be educated, it's a cycle of poverty. People in Mexico work hard from a very young age, therefore, education is not a priority, feeding the family is. It would be for you too, if you were there and understood.

Give me a break! Mexico is very wealthy country, unfortunately they're also a very corrupt country. Mexico needs to fix Mexico's problems, we have enough problems of our own. One of the biggest is all the illegals invading this our country.

Mexico has all the resources it would need to flourish as a sovereign nation. The problem lies with the few very powerful and corrupt that have seized control of all assets and any chance that Mexico might have. If we were to help them to flourish we would end up having to occupy that country militarily as there is such deep and dug in corruption beyond ANY diplomatic reproach.

As a mexican american, I can agree with a secure border, unfortunetly, the law passed by the feds, and now with the state of arizona, the focus has been on mexicans, crossing the border, which affect me and millions of other mexicans who are not immigrants, and have been here long before the mayflower landed. We need to work with mexico in a matter that will benifit both countries, and stop this insane racist movement by immigrants from other countries, who believe that ridding the native population is legal

The laws of the land are clear. Clear but not enforced. Perhaps we should be giving less attention to Arizona trying to step in for an absentee federal government and more to the fact that it's called illegal because federal law expressly stipulates that such border crossings are in fact, illegal. Perhaps we should be yelling for Mr. Obama to enforce the law so that Arizona doesn't have to.

I would like to make a suggestion. How about WE adopt Mexico's policy and border protection used on THEIR southern border to protect OUR southern border.

It would be EXTREMELY difficult for them to complain as the laws would be the SAME in both countries.

Of course those Mexican governors don't want a crack down on those criminal immigrants (if they are illegal, they are criminal). Illegal immigrants are sending millions back to their relatives in Mexico and that takes from our economy and gives it to Mexico.

I am a decendent of immigrants who entered this country through the FRONT door (Ellis Island). My grandparents both became U.S. citizens and both learned to read AND write ENGLISH. They assimilated with others in the melting pot, they did not insist that United States re-create their European culture for them here. I am all for LEGAL immigration as set forth in the law already in effect. Obama's administration is not doing anyone a favor by refusing to prosecute intruders (yes, intruders!) and/or deport them. Our friends across our southern border would do the same to us. We cannot continue to absord the numbers who have entered, this must be controlled. Something else that should scare everyone is: Just think how many 3rd world diseases are breeching our southern border! And, the criminals who transverse the border at will. Yes, we certainly need to overhaul this system that has been let go and NOT at the expense of the true U.S. citizens.

Maggie - I am going to assume that your parentage derives from Europe and probably came about the turn of the 20th century. Mexicans are native americans and have crossed that border for the last 2000 years. One made up border only 110 years old won't stop them.

All we want is for them to come here legally! Pay into the system just like we do. It is about time they pay for all of the services they use: healthcare, education etc.

If we would stop giving illegals free medical care, free education, free school lunches, JOBS!!!!!,food stamps, etc. we would not have to worry so much about the border security, because without all the perks, they would not want to be here. They are not fleeing Mexico because they fear for their lives! They are supposedly coming here to have a better life, but they insist on bringing their culture with them. They are not interested in learning English or maintaining their property and raising their standards. There is a reason that the crime rate and unemployment rate is so much lower in the northern states. I have no problem with people of other races. Having spent 22 years as a military wife I appreciate other people's cultures. My father was first generation American. We have a son in law who is first generation American. The magic word here is LEGAL!!!!!
