I'd like to offer a limited but real defense for the Phelpsists: They're an attenuated virus vaccine for the American body politic. This church is ruled by Satan. He loves to create division amongst the Christian Churches of the world. Our country was formed by Christians, but with religious tolerance for all religions and that is what makes us strong. The gay bashing and intolerance for our freedom fighters (soldiers, sailors, marines and airman) is an affront to our society. Christ preaches love for all mankind, not hate as this church does.

No one can pick and choose from the Bible and call it truth. Too many other nuts have done this before and usually the results are disastrous. Fortunately, most Christians and non-Christians take these people for what they are. Hate mongers and kooks.
August 03 2010 at 9:27 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyThis group has Bastardized the Christian Religion. This pisses me off that they would show up with their signs and chants at an American soldier's funeral. This soldier gave his life in the cause of giving you the freedom you live each day. The idea that his family and friends cannot have this time to grieve and reflect and to proudly carry his memory on that day. These are low-life scum to use that day to spread their hate. And a thank you to our soldiers. Thank you to the motorcycle riders who are doing their part to make sure the family and friends can have their moments of prayer and together time for a loved one.

July 29 2010 at 4:11 PM Report abuse Permalink +5 rate up rate down ReplyWe are 14 year old girls in public school who go to a baptist church and sickens us to see another so called "Baptist" Church/Cult do what they're doing. We have friends and loved ones that serve our country and YOU MR. PHELPS will never EVER show up their funerals(if they have one, hope not). And we have to say it's pretty sad that two teenage girls have better sense than the Court Justice System in this matter. Phelps should be locked up! This is NOT freedom of speech, its HATE. And if we heard right in social studies, HATE is a crime. The verses that were posted we said to be God hating, when really it was other men hating men. God hates the sin, but loves the sinner. And as shocking as it, God still loves Phelps. (God help us) We may not approve of homosexuality, but Phelps is taking it to a disturbing level to a point that we're cringing by just reading the article. And lemme tell you Mr. Phelps, if you go near another funeral for people who died so you can have your so called "your shelter/get out of jail free card and freedom of speech and assembly" than your in for a rude awakening when you face God and his judgment for YOUR JUDGING. May God have Mercy on your poor soul.
July 28 2010 at 2:44 PM Report abuse Permalink +8 rate up rate down Replythank God for dead soldiers, WE should honor these who gave their lives protecting our rights, so haters can crash their funerals with signs, lets all pray for the Westboro "wolves in sheeps clothing". Christians do NOT act this way!
July 28 2010 at 1:27 PM Report abuse Permalink +11 rate up rate down ReplyI appreciate knowing about whats going on with Westboro Baptist church, this is not a Godly action they take on, this is full blown hate crime at its worst, to call themselves a Christian is a spit in the face of JESUS and what he came to do and call us as believers myself include to do, he didnt call me to picket funerals of gays, nor picket those of our precious dead service Men and women, I for one stand up and pray for our men and women in service praying safety around them, and thanking them for all they have risk their lives in accomplishing our freedoms, I think its also hate to picket a gay funeral, people makes choices they may not be mine or how I agree or where I stand, but whom am I to toss hatred at them because I may not agree, it rips my heart out to know we have people in this world like Fred Phelps and his followers giving Christ a bad name, shame on him and his flock, I wish him no evil I pray God open his heart up and that Fred could show mercy as God shows such great mercy upon us, thank you again for the article!
July 28 2010 at 1:10 PM Report abuse Permalink +7 rate up rate down ReplyTo all those who think that all Christians are of the same mindset: PLEASE do not equate Fred Phelps and his followers with true Christianity - they are not the same thing. There is a broad spectrum of belief among Christians, from the conservative fundamentalist to the broadly progressive. Phelps is not in any category among that spectrum - he and his followers are merely haters. Jesus did not preach hate. Ignore them. The less press and attention they get, the less of an impact they will make.
July 28 2010 at 1:09 PM Report abuse Permalink +7 rate up rate down ReplyWhere is GOD in your life and teaching? Such hate from a place of worship towards a 16 year old young man is disturbing. I would think twice before entering their church

July 28 2010 at 1:10 PM Report abuse Permalink +3 rate up rate down ReplyNone of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness. Leviticus 18:6
Mr. Phelps... Guess you didnt get that memo from the almighty. Since you LOVE God soooooooo much I figured I would just remind you of these two verses as well...
Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' – Matthew 22:37-39
My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. - John 15:12-13
But hey Phelps, I forgot... God only loves the 100 people that follow you and no one else. Soldiers are above and beyond you because they define that passage from John above. Everyday military members lay down their lives either physically or mentally so that WE can live ours. Come out of the closet already man... No one cares about Gay/Lesbian/Straight anymore. Really love is love and kindness, well lets just say it is the only skeleton key I have ever known.
