Biden 2008 Presidential Campaign Fined for Excessive Donations, Sloppy Records

Vice President Joe Biden's ill-fated 2008 presidential campaign has been fined more than $219,000 for accepting excessive contributions, including a discounted flight on a private jet that took him on a round trip between New Hampshire and Iowa.

The audit by the Federal Election Commission imposed the fine, saying that Biden's organization also accepted at least $106,00 in donations that exceeded the limit allowed under the campaign finance law, the Associated Press reported. He was subject to the audit because his campaign received taxpayer funds under the public financing system. Biden's organization paid $7,911 for the plane ride, but the FEC said the charter rate was $34,800.

His bid for the presidency started in 2007, but didn't get far. Then-Sen. Biden dropped out in January 2008, resurfacing later on Barack Obama's short as a vice presidential running mate.

A spokeswoman in Biden's office said Saturday that Biden would pay the fines. "Some repayment is commonplace after presidential campaign audits and the repayment ordered here is relatively small," said Elizabeth Alexander.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

If Biden were a republican, the dems would be screaming for his resignation and calling him a racist.

I predict that the Rpublicans will win some seats in November, forcing members of that party to interact with the President Obama. All the numbers indicate that our best economy occurs when we have a demoncratic president and republican-led congress. Things will get much better after the November election, andthen Obama will be re-elected. Even though things will get better, the process will be very slow, so tighten you belt!

You got the Republican majority in both houses part right at least...but you could not be more wrong about Oboma being reelected.

Actually, this is not a story! Nothing that happened to Joe Biden is out of the ordinary. Like everyone else, politicians don't turn down campaign money. This would be foolish. It is better to simply pay the finds after the audit.
