Malia Obama will soon be going to overnight camp, for the first time.

Malia, who turned 12 on July 4, is enjoying a long Maine weekend, hanging out with her family at a pool and playing some tennis. But sometime between sightseeing at Acadia National Park and an expected August vacation at Martha's Vineyard, Malia will be off to camp -- location, so far undisclosed, a secret that may be guarded as close as details of Chelsea Clinton's wedding.

The source on the Malia camp plan is at the highest levels of government -- President Obama.

On Thursday, he told NBC's Chuck Todd that Malia, his oldest daughter -- Sasha is nine -- will be headed to camp later this summer -- and the Obama family vacation planning is being worked around her schedule. Sometime soon, Obama told Todd, "a month of (summer) it's going to be taken up with Malia going away for camp, which she's never done before. And I may shed a tear," a sentimental Obama added, "when she's on the way up."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

I think it's great that Malia is going to camp. It must be extremely difficult for a young girl just becoming a teenager to have the experiences most children her age take for granted. "Teenagers" are wonderful but sometimes it seems that their world can be turned upside down. One minute they are youngsters playing games & the next they're supposed to be & act like adults which they aren't & won't be for several years. Malia has the extra burden of living in the most famous house in the world. I'm very glad that her parents are giving her those experiences that every other teenager has.

Yes, it's great that Malia is going to camp. It's hard to have a normal childhood in the White House. But let's face it. The security for that camp experience is costing the American taxpayers mucho dollars. Americans nowadays can't afford day camp for their kids. Nevermind, sleepover camp.
