Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Recruiterrick, excellent point. Although, if I may add my opinion, I don't think most conservatives are unaware of history. In fact, I think they are well aware of it and I have a few conservative friends who are history buffs. The problem is they distort what they know to fit their political agenda. For instance, it is true that technically Hitler was a socialist, and he acted under the socialist name. Upon knowing this, my conservative friends like to automatically say that Hitler was a socialist. The problem is that Hitler also invaded a lot of socialist countries, such as France, Switzerland, and Finland. If you also look a little deeper you will find that socialist in these countries denounced Hitler's theories and his "brand" of socialism. Although, I find it hard to call what Hitler did socialism at all. If you look at socialist theory, there is nothing about "one pure arian" race such as Hitler preached and used for his Nazi propaganda.

On another note, I find it hard to believe that Obama is like Hitler. How? Is it because Obama is half white and half african-american? I don't really think that Jives with Hitler's "master race/pure arian race" ideals. Just saying.

Additionally, Hitler's brand of socialism was not Marxist at all, but was a far-right wing, nationalist concept (thus the term: National Socialist). The National Socialists thought that Marxism was a perversion of society...it "fed the bellies of Germans while ignoring their souls." For much of the 1920s, the Democratic Socialist Party dominated the Reichstag and instituted many of the socialist programs that the right likes to cite when speaking about Nazi domestic policies. The National Socialist movement was a reaction against the Democratic Socialists and what it percieved as a political party determined to bend the German will to international whims. The Nazis also abhorred "liberals" as the products of the unholy combination of Marxism and "international Jewry." There has been a lot of misinformation lately coming from the right concerning that particular time period and political movement...the reality is that there is no political parallel in Amrican politics to the Nazis (except the American National Socialist party...which if you think they are liberal, go ahead and ask them. You'll find a few of them patroling the Arizona/Mexico border).

Klan membership a career killer? Sure didn't impact Sen. Byrd's decades in the Senate.

It just goes to show how uneducated and unaware of history most conservatives are. To think the Nazi socialists were liberal is idiotic, they were as conservative as it gets, wiping out any liberal, tolerant agendas and killing those that held them. How many Americans learned in their classrooms that Prescott Bush Sr. was Hitlers financier in America in the 1930's, charged with growing the Nazi party in America and gaining funds from sympathizers here. To label Obama similar to Hitler is like calling a duck a bear.

As a conservative I have followed the Tea Party Movement very closely. I believe the vast majority of the folks in the movement have sincere concerns about the mammoth, destructive deficits and potential for much higher taxes. Contrary to what the Left is fond of saying, the vast majority of Tea Partiers are NOT racist simply because they disagree with the president's policies and programs. They are wary of the arrogance and growing power of the Federal Government's bureacracies. Like most of them I am worried about the ever increasing intrusion into business, industry, who is hired and who is fired, and growing hostility toward the Christian faith. It has been well said: "Government that is big enough and powerful enough to give you everything can easily become government that is big enough and powerful enough to take everything you have---including your freedom." Finally, the Tea Party Movement (like so many other organizations that started with the purpose of doing good) has attracted the fruitcake element. There are indeed some rabid racists in the movement. Do not paint the whole orgainization with the same brush. That is not fair, and it is wrong to do that.

I take offense at this cartoon depicting the Tea Party people as racists. I am not a racist and have never been a racist. I don't feel it is wrong for the Tea Party people to express their dissatisfaction with the way this government is being run. They, the left and Democrats, vilified President Bush but he was not a racist either. We have an element in this country that, because you don't agree with them or their ideology, call you a racist or some other derogatory name. As far as I know we have the right to peaceful dissent and we do that without racism. If you don't do as they say they will discredit you.

Another politically slanted 'cartoon' that does nothing, neither humors nor hints of serious insight. Oh, for the days of superb political cartooning.... re Indianapolis Star in the 1930's, 40's, 50's. THOSE were cartoons of substance.

Actually, I cannot agree...this cartoon provides insight into the workings of the minds of those who are attracted to the Tea Party. Not many of the cartoons by the Trussells are as insightful, but this one certainly hits the mark.

Instead of belitteling the President and belitteling the Tea Party, can WE find out what the President is for and what the Tea Party is for and discuss the feasability/desirability of what they are for? Then when WE find out what everybody is for can WE figure out actual ways to make these things happen? Then after WE make these things happen, how long do WE make them happen before WE either decide that yes they are a good thing or no they didn't work out? And, by the way, who is WE (the electorate ???) And how does "WE" make these things happen if "WE" are not in power ??? Will the other side (THEY ?) politely step aside and let us try what we want ???

We - the electorate have made a decision and that decision placed Obama in the white house. Thos who don't like it will - of course and naturally protest - what he does if they don't agree. that is America. What we have with Republicans is a blanket no and protest on everything even if it is one of their own ideas that Obama supports. The Tea Party is not a different party just the more radical wing of the Republican Party.

Obama wants to do what is best for the country. He wants to do what he can to balance the budget, "Pay-as-you-go", provide health care and employment for those who need it. He wants to end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He wants to cut wasteful spending out of the budget while still providing for the needs of the country. What does the tea party want? It seems that as a movement, they aren't quite sure. I've heard rumblings of "talk our country back" but from whom? I've heard lower taxes--which is something has done for the majority of Americans. When the Bush tax breaks expire next year, it won't mean a tax increase for the majority of Americans, but a return to Clinton-era tax policy for the wealthiest of us. It seems to me the tea party is mostly just a bunch of angry white people who don't realize that when they vote for stuff like tax cuts for the rich, they are voting against their own interests and the interests of the children.
