Newt Gingrich: No Ground Zero Mosque Until Saudis Allow Churches

Newt Gingrich is the latest Republican to speak out against the Muslim community center planned for near Ground Zero, arguing on his Web site that New York should ban the lower Manhattan mosque "so long as there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia."

In a blog post Wednesday, the former speaker of the House condemns "Islamists and their apologists" who call for religious tolerance as "arrogantly dishonest."

"They ignore the fact that more than 100 mosques already exist in New York City," Gingrich wrote. "Meanwhile, there are no churches or synagogues in all of Saudi Arabia. In fact no Christian or Jew can even enter Mecca."

Gingrich calls for an end to "double standards that allow Islamists to behave aggressively toward us while they demand our weakness and submission."

He also provides a history lesson of sorts, claiming that the name of the proposed "Cordoba House" is a "deliberately insulting term:"
It refers to Cordoba, Spain – the capital of Muslim conquerors who symbolized their victory over the Christian Spaniards by transforming a church there into the world's third-largest mosque complex.

Today, some of the Mosque's backers insist this term is being used to "symbolize interfaith cooperation" when, in fact, every Islamist in the world recognizes Cordoba as a symbol of Islamic conquest. It is a sign of their contempt for Americans and their confidence in our historic ignorance that they would deliberately insult us this way.

Gingrich calls for his readers to "take a stand" against the Cordoba House and the "Islamist cultural-political offensive designed to undermine and destroy our civilization."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. This is so ridiculous! people are making a big issue about building something in New York?? If America is such a melting pot and we're supposed to be the "greatest country" we are sure not acting like it. I think gingrich needs to take a multi- cultural class and realize that he is not up lifting the so called "American values" of this country which is to not discriminate against other cultures and to accept them as Americans who has rights!!!!! Especially making ignorant remarks against someone who is are PRESIDENT(I read gingrich's other article about the whole Africa and Pres.Obama thing). I think its perfectly fine to build something in New York. And its IGNORANT to make a statement about the Saudi's not wanting a church there because they're only about domination and they will have someone just come and blow it up. Thats rude to make comments like that because they are not about domination and totalitarianism. People should take in consideration what they post in these comments. If your ignorant then keep your thoughts to yourself because in everyone else's comments that I read ,some people spoke poorly of Arab nations. Even though I am not Arab I take this into offense because misconception and ignorance are being spoken in these posts. So to everyone who have posted on here, I mean this statement in no offense to you but just some words to remember: KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! ITS BETTER TO BE QUIET AND LISTEN THAN TO SPEAK ON SOMETHING WITH SUCH IGNORANCE.

As a European, I can only say that Newt Gingrich sees history correctly. Spain was for several centuries dominated by Islam/Muslims and under their political and religious control. Indeed, they did transform the christian cathedral in Cordoba and made it into the biggest islamic center outside the middle east. And yes, it stood for the symbolic dominance of the islamic faith over the christian faith. Anybody who has lived near or with arab nations for long times, as we Europeans have, knows that there can never be a common base between the arab and western cultures. There could be "stand-off", or "truce", or idealy tolerance and the "agreement to peacefully disagree", but it takes both sides to achieve that. At this point in time, the islamic side has no intentions whatsoever to do it! They shoot for world dominance. It is and always has been their dream. And don't be fooled by the crowds of peaceful moslems out there: yes, they do exist, but!!! they do not count much in their ultimate schemes. They rather serve as a smart smoke screen to hide from us unsuspecting westerners the true agenda of take-over, pursued by the supreme Ayatollahs of Islam! Arabs do not respect weak people, they dispise them! Tolerance in their eyes is just another word for cowardice. If you don't believe it, go and live in any of the islamic countries for some time, then come back and speak up about what you've seen!

Propose: Ground Zero, itself, be fitted for one or two remarkable edifices, the best in the world, to commemorate by design and on its main floors, what happened on that day of 9/11, but the heroism of it, as oppose the tragedy and America's determined resurgence to come out of the ashes of that attack. Let it additionally be called "the Freedom Center" where the foundation of religious, poltical freedom is celebrated as a right for men and women to worship according to the dictates of their conscience and not the invading of their minds or hearts by any tyrnnical narrow source. Then it won't matter about a nearby mosque. It will merely demonstrate what a new Phoenix of American restoration from dead ashes. We are a free nation that allows the free exercise of one's faith, and two unparalleled edifices dedicated to that will speak in volumns what we are as a nation...and it will be built precisely where ground zero is, forever dedicated to our children and our children's children. Let every American business and institution, as well as contributions from the world over give to that cause...and it will be built on ground zero and it will be called appropriately, Freedom Center, New York. That is how to address history and the future.

Let no one fool you about Islam being a religion. Sure, it has a god,
and a hereafter, and 72 virgins. But in its essence Islam is a
political ideology. It is a system that lays down detailed rules for
society and the life of every person. Islam wants to dictate every
aspect of life. Islam means 'submission'. Islam is not compatible with
freedom and democracy, because what it strives for is sharia. If you
want to compare Islam to anything, compare it to communism or
National Socialism, these are all totalitarian ideologies.

Islam and Shari'a Law are One! You're right. It's a political ideology and a security issue!

I agree with Gingrich on the double-standards issue and also on the significance of the name, "Cordoba House." There can be no other purpose than symbolism to the construction of this mosque complex if there are already over 100 mosques in New York City. And the "symbolism rights" at Ground Zero are unequivocally ours, not theirs. Home field advantage.

Gingrich has a point. Try putting up a church in Pakistan and it will be destroyed or there will be a suicide bomber in a few months. In Saudi a church would not be allowed. Christians are exiting Muslim nations.
Muslims are leaving as well to go to democratic nations where some, but not all, begin sowing their hatred and intolerance of non muslims. Converts to Islam are particularly dangerous. Somali Americans have already killed as suicide bombers. Pakistani Americans have been captured. Other Muslim Americans are training for Jihad and rejoice in the actions at Fort Hood.
NO Mosques IN NEW YORK until they allow Churches in Saudi.

All this is hot air about denying those New York muslims their right to practice their religion. The contention is about putting up a building, not practicing a religion. As someone has stated there are many mosques in New York City already. Hell, there are buckets of mosques all over the United States. That being the case just how does denying a 'building permit' equate with denying the practice of any religion?

Well Newt, how about this: Maybe these New York Muslims will aggree to build elsewhere and not build a mosque 2 blocks from 'Ground' zero if the USA ('United' States of America)like the KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) bans alchohol (18th Amendment) and make prayer for Muslims,Christains and Jewish mandatory 5 times a day {1 Thessalonians 5:17},enforces a veiled dress code {1 Cor 11: 5-6}, make adultry illegal{matt 5:28}and chopp off hands of theives{5:29-30} Imagine New York and Riyahdh as sister cities!

One of the reasons our country is so great is because we have FREEDOM OF RELIGION. We are not Saudi Arabia. Mr. Gingrich needs to review the US constitution.

The Constitution says that Congress shall make no law restricting the free exercise of religion. With over 100 mosques in NYC, there is clearly no law restricting building them.I have not yet heard of anyone being prohibited from their daily prayers, either, wherever they might be in the city. If the destruction of the Towers had been simply the act of a homicidal maniac who happened to be a Muslim, that would be one thing. But its explicit purpose was to terrorize the enemies of Islam. Building this mosque is simply a probe to see if they succeeded. "Just Say No."
