Al Gore's March of the Masseuses

Former Vice President Al Gore's "march of the hotel masseuses" has begun across the front page of the National Enquirer.

First came Oregon massage therapist Molly Hagerty, 54, whose recent Enquirer allegations of groping and forced kissing by Gore, 62, in 2006 prompted Portland police to reopen their probe earlier this month. They initially closed the case last year for insufficient evidence. Hagerty initially refused to cooperate in 2007 but changed her mind in January 2009, when she gave police a lengthy statement.

Now two more masseuses are being depicted as objects of Gore's unwanted attentions. Those alleged incidents were described in the latest Enquirer by unnamed hotel sources about unidentified massage therapists at undisclosed lodgings in Beverly Hills in 2007 and Tokyo in 2008.

Gore family spokeswoman Kalee Krieder in Nashville declined to address the latest masseuse story but sent me this e-mail: "I'll refer you to my previous statement: The Gores cannot comment on every defamatory, misleading, and inaccurate story generated by tabloids."

This week's Enquirer, which began hitting newsstands Wednesday, says one "purported incident" took place at the rooftop spa of a hotel while Gore was in Hollywood for the Oscars for "An Inconvenient Truth." According to this Enquirer tipster, "the therapist claimed that when they were alone, Gore shrugged off a towel and stood naked in front of her. He pointed at his erect penis and ordered her, "Take care of this." The woman allegedly fled the spa and complained to a superior. She is now said to have moved to San Francisco.

The Enquirer reports that the Tokyo masseuse complained to hotel management and threatened to call police about "sexually inappropriate" conduct that allegedly occurred after Gore spoke at Keio University. No details were provided, although the source is quoted as saying "the alleged incident soon became known among some Tokyo journalists."

As for Hagerty, the alleged groping took place Oct. 26, 2006 at the posh Hotel Lucia. Hagerty hired a Portland attorney specializing in sex crimes, who consulted police in January 2007 about a possible case. The police tried three times to interview Hagerty, but she decided instead to pursue a civil lawsuit, not a criminal action. Her lawyer bowed out of the case thereafter.

In January 2009, she asked the police to let her give a lengthy statement. Portland authorities declined to press charges, citing insufficient evidence of a sex crime (click for audio and written versions of the 67-page Portland police report).

But recently, the Portland Police Bureau reopened its investigation. "There should have been command level review at the time on the specifics of this case and decisions on whether the investigation should go forward," the Bureau announced in statement.

The latest edition of the Enquirer says Hagerty had a "secret July 7 meeting" with Portland Police Bureau investigators, who also interviewed "several others."

"I can't release any information at this time about the investigation," Officer Mary Wheat, the PPB spokeswoman, told me via e-mail. "I don't think there have been any 'secret' meetings but detectives have been completing the investigation. I do not have a timeline at this time. She added that Police Chief Larry O'Dea "asked that it be done quickly."

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. I have been a licensed massage therapsit for six years. During that time I have done 8000 hours of massages. Within those 8000 hours there have been two cases of unwanted sexual advances, in both cases from men. My wife has done a similar amount of massage and has had slightly more advances, not much, maybe a handful in as many years.

Bottom line is, making an unsollicited sexual advance to a massage therapist in this day and age, given all the State Regulations, the highly public nature and locale of upscale hotel spas is a pretty stupid thing to do and doesn't happen a lot. You are putting yourself in legally jepordy taking such action and could be arrested in many States. Think about it ...the police in Oregon are conducting a criminal investigation ... as they should.

Given this, I really doubt that someone with Al Gore's media and public savy and exposure would therefore bother to take such an extreme risk.

The fact these thoughts have not occurred to any journalists writing about this is a sad comment on the lack of journalistic research that goes on in today's media. For all we know, Ms. Haggerty may be the next Linda Tripp.

I can't help in all of this, but recall the well funded efforts of people like Paula Jones against President Clinton by members of the far right. Follow the money! Al Gore is doing and has done more to work against the entrenched interests of those who make billions of dollars off of carbon based energy. I am sure they are not happy with his "Inconvenient Truth". How convenient it would be for those people to discredit this Nobel Laureate, Business Leader and American Statesman with a well funded ochestrated smear campaign.

Findrobin states it very well. The people in America are only able to "follow a leader" like sheep to slaughter. Were the senior citizens in this country willing to take a stand against the "president, Congress & House of Representatives." For them to just arbitralily take away our measley increases for 2010 & 2011 to fund some nonsense investigation which is not worth the paper it is written on, and we, like sheep, let them get away with it. Shame on us. We are the generation that those that follow us are looking to for being able to take the lead and make "things right" Have we ALL abandoned the freedom we are granted by being Citizens of this wonderful country, or are we willing to let someone, not of the Christian faith and way of life, come in and totally ruin our life heritage? I have a wonderful message saved in my E-mail that every american should read, and re-read until the light dawns, and they realize what we are up against, and also, you younger people within a few years reaching the age to draw your Social Security Benefits, and, they have all been used for such frivilous, "I owe them a favor" mentality of our elected officials and with no chance to vote on it ourselves, is able to be put into law without the concent of the population who placed them in this position of authority to start with, it is way past time for us to act. Thank you for my chance to express my feelings. Lets start action immediately, and impeach all of them, and put people in who are interested in the populace welfare, not their pockets, their accomplishments, and look at themselves as "Gods'", worthy of adulation.

I am not agreat fan of Gore, but I am sure that he has enought commen sense to know that things like this get out all over the world. What I see here is MONEY, she does not want criminal charges, but just civil suite. Reads money, easier to make a pay off then spend a lot of time in court and cuts down on the cost of the high price lawyers.

I along with everyone else don't know what did or didn't happen. But it seems to me like if someone had groped me or done somethine I didn't approve of, I would have reported it at the time not wait 3 or 4 years, it looks like a scam when you wait that long. Julie in NC

Wanda, The National Enquirer is a much more legitimate paper than the New York Times, these days. They are the ones that broke the Roberts scandal. They don't have a vested interest in protecting their liberal friends. If the New York Times actually had journalist, they might have uncovered the story. However, they probably wouldn't have ran with it, even if they had known about it.

Did I read this correctly - unnamed hotel sources about unidentified massage therapists at undisclosed lodgings? How can you deny those facts? Witches in Salem were given the same kind of charges.

If you're rich, famous or both you're a target for anyone looking the hit the blackmail lottery. If you make a living rubbing oil on people's bodies, I'll be you know all about a happy ending. Its an inconvenient truth but there it is...

I say consider the source. These allegations were published in The National Enquirer. If they were in The New York Times,The Washington Post or some other more "legit" paper,I would say there might be some truth. But since the Enquirer seems to make its money printing stories about which star has cellulite and who is(supposedly) secretly gay,I'm not sure you can take anything they publish seriously.

The source you talk about is the same source that broke the John Edwards story when the New Your Times and Washington Post were afraid to touch it.

really? Remember the John Edwards story? The New Your times was printing all type of articles protecting John Edwards. The national Enquirer had it right about John Edwards and his "Love child" and afair he had with the women. They broke the story which eventually forced Edwards to admit he was lying. It's a sad state when a trash paper is becoming a source for big storys because most of the "legit" papers you mention only print stuff accrately when it benefits their political adgenda. Bottom line is most of the media is corrupt and in bed with the politicians so you can't trust any of them.

It will probably be a long time before we know what, if anything, actually happened. But if these things turn out to be true, then the thing that will stick with me is how Gore threw Clinton under the bus when the Lewinsky thing broke. Whatever you want to say about that, at least it was between consenting adults. Sexual adventures are part of life, like it or not, and neither major party has a monopoly on them. For every Sanford there's a Spitzer. But chastizing others for behavior that you yourself engage in is hubris, and that has been the greatest single downfall of leading figures throughout history.

No, it doesn't matter what their politics are, as long as you're not claiming moral superiority. Then it becomes a problem.
