Following a bipartisan outcry over the ouster of USDA regional official Shirley Sherrod, President Obama phoned Sherrod Thursday afternoon to offer his apology. According to a White House press release, the president expressed "his regret about the events of the last several days. He emphasized that Secretary [of Agriculture Tom] Vilsack was sincere in his apology yesterday, and in his work to rid USDA of discrimination."

Sherrod has been offered a more senior position in the department, which she is considering. Obama further explained to Sherrod his belief "that this misfortune can present an opportunity for her to continue her hard work on behalf of those in need, and he hopes that she will do so."

Following the president's phone call, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that the White House operator had phoned Sherrod two times on Wednesday night, but was unable to reach her. When Obama and Sherrod finally did speak, at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Gibbs said that she accepted the president's apology. He said the president had read the full transcript of Sherrod's NAACP address, and that he spoke with Sherrod about "how the experiences he had and written about in his book ["Dreams of My Father"] in some ways were similar to the experience she had talked about in her speech."

Gibbs addressed Vilsack's apology to Sherrod, saying, "I think the phrase 'I'm sorry' could and should be said a lot more in this town. It's hard to say sometimes." Gibbs reiterated that Vilsack's regret, "was coming from the bottom of his heart."

Conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart -- who released an edited version of Sherrod's speech, setting in motion the chain of events -- has yet to apologize to Sherrod. When asked about this, Gibbs conceded, "Do I think this would be more teachable moment if Breitbart apologized? Yes." In television interviews on Wednesday and Thursday, Sherrod expressed dismay over Breitbart's actions and said she was considering pressing a libel suit against him. Asked about this, Gibbs said there are "many good lawyers in this town and in towns across the country."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Dear Shirley:
I will keep you in my prayers. I was borned in the south (Tallahassee, Florida) moved to Dayton Ohio where I lived for 38 years prior to returning to Tallahassee, Florida. I know how the people of north vs the south and how the south vs the north also how the haves verses the have nots in our daily work world. I have been unjustly fired from a job, had to take a personal break afterward, depression almost took me out of here. But God! But God! But God! I know that you are hurting right now and you do need your personal space now. Take your time, think, pray and do what you do best, stand your ground. Love Ya!

This is the problem with todays "sound bite" world. Things are taken out of context.

Obama is great at apologizing for others like America or anybody in his administration but the buck stops at Obama only long enough for him to spend it.

have you libs figured out yet that without fox news being duped into this story, there wouldn't be a story for ms. charade, i mean sherrod, to gain from? Actually fox news, only reported of her firing after learning of it. Glenn Beck was actually on her side as the whole context of her speech had not been received. I applaud him for that.

Breitbart should have considered that he might have been set up ,if this was the only
part of the tape he was presented .For this , he is at fault...I think all will think twice when something of this nature falls into their lap again.

If you don't understand why Ms. Sherrod said what she said, you don't understand our history. If you can't appreciate what is meant for the daughter of a man lynched by the KKK to overcome her more than justifiable suspicion of white folks in the South decades ago, you don't understand our history. As a white girl visiting with Southern family in the South of the 1950's and 60's, I remember "legal" segregation, the "Whites Only" signs and the terror and oppression that was part of the lives of so many Afican-Americans. It was real and it was terrible. I remember the lynchings and the deaths of those who dared to speak up; I remember that black people were not given the respect of being addressed as Mr., Miss or Mrs. I remember that we needed send the National Guard to protect young black children whose families dared enroll them in "whites only" schools. I remember my shame that as a teenage girl I could do so little to help. This is not ancient history; this is part of my personal experience.

It has always seemed to me that white people have always feared black people because whites could not believe that black people would not want to kill those who had made their lives a living HE double L. We seem to be incapable of accepting the forgiveness of folks like Ms. Sherrod because we all too often lack that ability to forgive.

Yes this is a "teachable" moment. But only if we want to learn.

Ms. Sherrod has the distinction of being the first person, other than the leader of a foreign country, to receive an apology from President Obama.

No way! Fox does not even understand the word honor! How would you then expect them to use it?

She was relating a story that happened 20 years ago (the white man said recently he was helped) and how she changed her views from racism to seeing that it was a class war of poor against rich. What is driving this story was that the NAACP called TPARTIERS racist. Bartbreit had this story a long time ago and decided to use it to defend the TPARY saying that the NAACP was racist. Remember while she talked many people in the crowd not knowing the outcome were agreeing with her. Her father was murdered by a white over some cows and there was no conviction; one can see how she conceived her views. People need to take a deep breath; racism goes on in every race: white, black, asian, etc.

Ms. Sherrod, I am awed by your story! Be thankful that at last we have an administration that can admit to a mistake of the first order since the last couldn't find even one minor mistake they'd made.
