Tom Vilsack 'Jumped the Gun' on Firing Shirley Sherrod, Obama Says

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack rushed to judgment when he fired Shirley Sherrod over a misunderstanding about comments she made on race, President Obama told ABC News.

"He jumped the gun, partly because we now live in this media culture where something goes up on YouTube or a blog and everybody scrambles," the president told "Good Morning America."

Obama, who called Sherrod to apologize for the White House's overreaction, said he hopes members of his administration can learn from the headline-grabbing controversy of the past few days.

"I've told my team and I told my agencies that we have to make sure that we're focusing on doing the right thing instead of what looks to be politically necessary at that very moment. We have to take our time and, and think these issues through," the president told ABC.

"If there's a lesson to be drawn from this episode, it's that rather than us jumping to conclusions and pointing fingers at each other, we should all look inward and try to examine what's in our own hearts and, as a consequence, I think we will continue to make progress," he said.

Vilsack also personally apologized to Sherrod and offered her a better job at the Agriculture Department, but she said Thursday she hasn't decided whether to accept.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Shirley Sherrod is definetly a classy act. Descriminated and violated by irresponsible criticisms from her top peers, the NAACP and all others, who acted irresponsably without personal consideration to the work she has done in the past and for what she has stood for professionally during her career. Our top leadership has to learn when when acting responsably means responding to a National Catastrophe or other Citizens Imperative Needs and when confirmation and verification must take place before acting in haste. Which can cause ruining of the carreer of a much needed PUBLIC SERVANT who has served and KNOWS her community well. Let this be one more lesson. It is not the first time OUR NATIONAL LEADERS PUT THEIR FOOT IN THEIR MOUTH. SHILEY is not only a CLASSY ACT but HUMBLING also.

Sherrod claimed on CNN that the firing came from higher up.

This is a perfect time to turn our attention on ourselves and realize that the media DOES run this nation. We, as well as the politicians are just their puppets. They say shout and we say "How Loud" My question is...How, without trampling on freedom of speech, turn down the dial a bit on these kind of injustices. If a journalist does not do his research before he speaks, how do we hold them accountable. Is an apology enough. When is enough enough?

Maybe this sordid deal will help rid us of the air pollution of hate-filled people like Hannity and Limbaugh. I hope Fox will not punish Shep Smith for not jumping into the fray without some time to think it over. He may be fired for not following the Fox anti-Obama and anti-Democrat campaign.

Obama should recognize "jumping the gun" with his inappropriate remarks calling a police oficer racist after the arrest of a belligerant nasty college proffesor as would ANY officer would with an out of control unruly person. Seems blacks can call the race card but whites are not entitled to the same. We are all bias to some degree so we are all racists to some degree. What is new about that??????

also in that apology should be to 1: the people who didn't support the health care bill she called racist, 2: Fox News since O'Reilly reported it AFTER she resigned: 3: the TParty people who were called racists by the NAACP. Tit for Tat news by Breitbart does not serve the people.

I was so proud of Mrs. Sherrod. I hope she does not take the position that was offered to her. She is a strong woman and a gifted orator. She could probably make more money and help more poor people by doing public speaking and keeping the dialogue open.

many of these articles and news pieces blamed Beck, he would not show the clip and he defended her. even when he does the right thing he gets kicked, can we stop with the 'rascist " name calling? it's getting rediculous.

Actually, they don't blame Beck. The articles insinuate that concern over Beck presenting it on his show prompted the reaction. However, that was only supposition by reporters.
