Lt. Matt Vinton of Akron, Ohio, 24 and fresh from officer training and Army Ranger school, told me days after the battle how he maneuvered his eight men using the scant cover of rice paddy dikes and low brush. Slowly, they edged their way unseen up the chest-deep water of irrigation canals toward the Taliban.Every time our troops go out they should have air recon and air support with man and unmaned aircraft.

July 25 2010 at 9:00 PM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down ReplyA $60 billion bill for the wars was just passed and not one republican wanted budget cuts to pay for it so as not to raise the deficit. Odd.
July 25 2010 at 11:33 AM Report abuse Permalink -4 rate up rate down ReplyOdd is the Democrates control both houses and passed the bill. How is it you only refer to Republicans in this comment?
July 25 2010 at 12:14 PM Report abuse Permalink +4 rate up rate down ReplyStanley, because the republicans have made a big issue the last few weeks about every thing having to be paid for but when it comes to killing not a peep from them.
July 25 2010 at 12:25 PM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down ReplyI thought we were supposed to get Bin laden and leave? Not rebuld a country and establish a government.
July 25 2010 at 11:17 AM Report abuse Permalink -3 rate up rate down ReplyIt is a real shame that General Mc was the only one who saw what was really happening and got fired for it. This is the current administrations Viet Nam and they are stuck on how to stop it.
July 25 2010 at 10:42 AM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyIt is really refreshing seeing a positive news piece about progress being made by our men and women so far from home. Admirable and responsible reporting compared to the days when battles and goals we won were routinely reported as defeats. (Tet Offensive for a glaring example... AND complete disgrace to American journalism history). What I cannot help but find heart breaking though are the number of times we are asking our troops to re-deploy. Three and four tours in combat is not at all unusual anymore. Just trying to put myself in the place of some of these young (and sometimes not so young) men and women, it must be disheartening. I can't help but feel they must sometimes think .. "I've somehow survived 4 tours.. and unlike the friends I've seen disabled and killed, I have walked off the plane 4 times..... But I guess they are just going to keep sending me back till I either can't or there is a flag draped over me too." ...I really wish there were some way to say "God bless you soldier... you have answered your country's call each time she has spoken. You've more than earned your own freedom and you have defended mine... Thank you! Oh yea, and by the way? You are dismissed.... for sure this time."

July 25 2010 at 10:02 AM Report abuse Permalink +9 rate up rate down ReplyHow much longer will american families allow our governments, republican or democrat, to have their sons and daughters shed blood for....who knows ...what ???is the taliban the enemy of America ? is Karzai the stauch ally and friend of the US ? please tell me I am wrong.Iraq is now reverting to their old bloody religious battles...afghanistan will be the same when we leave, if ever ?
July 25 2010 at 7:50 AM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyPaul, too many powerful people/lobbies have a vested interest in keeping us in middle east wars.
July 25 2010 at 11:20 AM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down Replymen and women in the military volunteer to join. we aren't forced. when you make a statement like that it puts in our heads, why are we fighting for people like YOU. its only when we think of our family's and the people that appreciated us that we remember what we fight for. in the end, we choose to fight, men and women are trying to volunteer to deploy. to answer your questions, yes the taliban is the enemy. otherwise why would even there own people be relieved that we have arrived. like said in the story, soon enough afghanistan will become like iraq and the people will come forward and join their police force to defend this from ever happening again.
July 25 2010 at 2:59 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyThis is just the repeat of the mistakes of the VietNam war, nothing else. How can you leave the enemy's capital city (Kandahar) unoccupied all those years? It should be taken, ASAP, and kept under our control as long as necessary.
July 25 2010 at 7:21 AM Report abuse Permalink +4 rate up rate down ReplyThe only reason these mistakes have been all these years is because the previous administration dropped the ball here to satisfy the ego of W in Iraq. And even there he was unsuccessful judging by the way that country seems to be reverting to it's old ways.
July 25 2010 at 9:49 AM Report abuse Permalink -4 rate up rate down ReplyThat's what we said about taking Hanoi as early as 1965. Of course those who served and knew the politics of the situation-then and now-also know the answer.
