"I live in a border town, and the immigration issue was coming up, but for some reason it wasn't being talked about in a place that's 98 percent Hispanic," Salinas said. "I thought it was my duty to say something, and when I started organizing ... I had never felt that excited, that passionate before. It was the feeling that, 'I want to do this the rest of my life, and I'll wake up happy every single day.' And that's how I got into politics."
"It was an urge I had, because my community wasn't growing, and it's my home and I wanted to give back to the people who'd given me so much," he said. "If not me, then who? If not now, when? We worked really hard and were able to pull off what many people said was not only improbable, but impossible."
"It's a tricky border to walk, but you have to have an appropriate humility about what you can do and yet have the confidence that if you have a smart point to make, to make it regardless of experience," he said.
"Conservative principles are the best thing for the country and since I'm young and, God willing, am going to be living in this country for decades to come, I have an even greater incentive to fight for the country's future," he said.
"I saw him on the campaign trail a bunch and we got to talking," Kleinhans said. "It was a perfect fit. I think he respected my work for the College Republicans, which is how I wound up where I am."This was a great article. I really enjoyed reading about these rising young politicians. Hopefully they will not get burnt out too soon...

July 28 2010 at 3:20 PM Report abuse Permalink +5 rate up rate down ReplyThey should get jobs in the private sector first.... before they try to tell us what to do. Better still they should get private sector jobs and stay there. There are no "political rising stars" only control freaks who want to broaden their influence.
July 28 2010 at 3:06 PM Report abuse Permalink +5 rate up rate down ReplyWe DO need new blood in the Senate and Congress, but not quite THIS young. They have no life experience yet. PLUS, I HIGHLT mistrusy anyone who wnats to ba a "Creer Politician". They are the ones who screwed up everything in the first place. A TWO TERM limit should be instituted. Look at Strom Thurmond, brough into chambers in a wheelchair. That guy didn't even know what PLANET he was on, yet he was making LAWS! The last old codger that died was another prime example. PLEASE Vote OUT all these fools that have been living off the Public Dime and are completely out of touch with the reality that WE have to deal with. Long Live the USA!
July 28 2010 at 2:01 PM Report abuse Permalink +10 rate up rate down ReplyI hope these people are questioning the ethics and principles of their mentors. We DON'T need the continuation of the current trend of politics in this country. We need new ideas and new stances, and hopefully, a new party. I'm tired of business as usual. I myself wanted to go into politics and I worked for my state senate. I got so tired of how uninformed the politicians were. Some were voting on bills they never even read! We need leaders that will not spend so much time on their moral agenda, but finding solutions for the economy, immigration, foreign policy, health care, and education reform. Just because one has money to go to a fancy ivy league school, he or she isn't necessarily a good leader.

1. If the government wants to help, help the ones who fought for the freedoms of this country, and put the freeloaders on the workwagon. Bet a lot of lettuce could be harvested for hardly nothing. And if you paid legals to work, the price of produce would SOAR about 15-20%. Legislators will be hearing about this soon. (oh yeah, I wasnt born in the USA, I came here legally though. My wife same thing, at different time, from different place. So we can speak on the subject. If you are looking for a handout, better prove that you cant contribute to receive. Another of the 100% of government operated services that is operated inefficiently. Doesnt mean the services arent needed, just run "like a government institution" aka terribly.
Im sick of having lived frugally, and saving, and a little investing during my 20's and 30's so that I have something in my 40's, just so that those who shot their wad during the 20's 30's and beyond with no safety net can think that they are entititled to being compensated. I can speak this way because I even have siblings who thought that way, and now cry to me for help.
2. Pity much of our education system is more interesed in teaching revised history, and funny math then true survival skills.
Privatize education, and substitute trade schools for those not academically inclined. We need skilled labor, just like we need artistic and logic based engineers to keep our country from being passed by. And for goodness sakes institute some personal responsibilty economics. Sad to say, parents (or parent, because irreconcileable differences are a sign of the selfish) are too busy working to instill any success traits into their own kids.
3. I am optomistic, those who so demonstrated ecpression by inking their bodies with tattoos will also be a thing of the past. In 20 years there will be 10,000 parlors out of business. I just hope they are putting something away for the future, so you (that are working) dont have to bail them out too. Yep YOU, because YOUR money is being used by the government for the entitlement programs.
4. I hope the USA doenst impose their "will" on another country or government. Stay the heck out of our kitchen, and we wont! For the love of money and oil! If that is the case what war is our president putting on the lost oil in the gulf? No more drilling? For all the people who believe our defense spending is out of hand, start taking foreign language lessons.
5. You dont have a RIGHT to a job. You have the FREEDOM to pursue it legally though. Make the most of your freedom to improve yourself, and follow your dream.
The old saying is those who can't hit, coach. Reread the post that has President Lincoln's quote. He has it correct.
Bravo Josh, Bravo!
July 28 2010 at 3:41 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDanger with upcoming new Democrats and upcoming new Republicans is that the old-timers that are in Washington or in yours home state are teaching these newer politicians the same thing they been doing. I guess I'm trying to say these old politicians are going to end up corrupting the new leaders of this country. While our communities need more jobs or should save better paying jobs. Because families cannot survive on minimum wage not win tennis shoes or their children are over $100 or pants or shirts and anything else. such as computers in order to compete with other students they do need computers and you can't do that with minimum-wage with companies in this country leads a community where they been doing business for years and their wages are above minimum wage and they leave this country and go to another country where they will exploit the people in that community for profit. Those of you who are in college and you believe that you're going to politics and if elected your priority will be the citizens that elected you to office and not those of other countries, where corruption of the past will be on the science-fiction channel and not in Washington. we or the people in the hope that our Constitution doesn't get destroyed by the past or the future. also remember whether you're a Democrat or Republican or independent your primary responsibility is not that of your party but that other people who you represent. It's not what's best for a certain group of people but what is best for this country
July 28 2010 at 3:08 AM Report abuse Permalink +9 rate up rate down ReplyI am happy to see that these young people are interested in making this country better and maybe one or a few will have a place in politics and actually be a part of the change. It's better than seeing people at this age just party and not be motivated to do anything. It is sad that Salinas things walking out of school sent a positive message, The only message I see is that she agrees with criminal activity in this country. She needs to go back and take a U.S.citizen class.
I think she has forgotten what it means to be an American Citizen if she even is one. (which I find so sick is that illegals want all the rights in this country) Gee could I go to Mexico and demand my rights there? Don't think so!
Good we have some new blood coming in to fill the ranks of politics. Now maybe, just maybe the politians, on both sides who are running for office again, who have tax problems, well they just need to pay up or get out of the race. The country in the state it is in, needs those tax dollars. The americans need those non-paid tax dollars to pay our Teachers, Police Officer, our Firemen, city, county and state employees Gee isn't it the same as extortion or something.....????????? It is like taking monies that are not yours and spending it on something you want. Not paying the salaries of the ones who mistakenly voted for them. So I guess we better rteally check out the ines we are votinmg for this coming election...Knowing they played by the rules and earned their spot on the ticket. Tim Geither stills needs to pay up. You can not claiim stupid for a period of time and now be in the position he is............
July 27 2010 at 9:57 PM Report abuse Permalink +14 rate up rate down ReplySo when is a public servant a STAR????????
