Michael Reagan to Arkansas GOP: What Would Ronald Reagan Do?

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas -- Michael Reagan knows what fires up the Republican base -- his father.

On Friday night, Reagan visited Arkansas -- a battleground state in the midterm elections -- to urge 300 GOP faithful at the state's annual convention to focus on the big picture, not the small details. That is, if they want to recapture Ronald Reagan's "shining city on a hill."

"We shouldn't worry about who gets the credit," said Reagan, a former conservative radio host and the adopted son of Ronald Reagan and the actress Jane Wyman. "We should worry about winning the elections in November."

In Arkansas, Republican Rep. John Boozman, who won the May Senate primary against seven contenders, faces Democratic incumbent Sen. Blanche Lincoln in November. Lincoln squeaked out a win in the June Democratic run-off against Lt. Gov. Bill Halter.

Michael Reagan speaksA recent poll showed Lincoln trailing Boozman by 19 points -- 54 percent to 35 percent.

Arkansas' Second District seat could also flip from Democratic to Republican. It is currently held by Democratic Rep. Vic Snyder, who announced in January that he would not seek re-election after 13 years in the House of Representatives. Former Bush White House aide Tim Griffin is vying for the House seat against Democratic State Senator Joyce Elliot, who would be Arkansas' first black member of Congress.

Reagan said the GOP should remember his father's 11th commandment -- "Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican." The 24 -hour news cycle, he said, has made politics "too personal."

"You have to keep it at a political level," Michael Reagan added. "It hurts the cause when it gets too personal." For Republicans to win, he told a dinner audience, "We have to look at the big picture like Ronald Reagan did. How do we change the world?"

He spent part of the night reflecting on his father's legacy, especially the fall of the Berlin Wall. Reagan visited Berlin last November -- the 20th anniversary of the wall's collapse -- and said he felt ashamed that President Barack Obama was not present.

"The president of the United States would go to Copenhagen, instead, to try and bring the Olympics to Chicago," he said.

He pointed out that Obama sent a video, which Secretary of State Hillary Clinton introduced in Berlin, explaining to her audience that Obama had to overcome his own walls. Reagan said he was irate that Hillary Clinton chose to "play the race card on that kind of day."

The Arkansans cheered.

But Reagan didn't throw blame just at Obama. He said that if the Republican Party had done its job when it held the presidency and Congress, "Barack Obama would not have been handed the keys to the White House."

In a media availability before the dinner, Reagan lashed out at the proposed Ground Zero mosque in New York. Earlier this week, he wrote a column agreeing with Sarah Palin who regards the mosque is an unnecessary "provocation."

"People in the Middle East don't look at things like we do," Reagan said. "Mohammad Atta wins, that is how it will be viewed. I don't need a kumbaya at Ground Zero to know America cares. That's hallowed ground"

Ronald Reagan would not recognize today's republican party and they certainly would never accept him. Reagan raised taxes to close the deficit, granted amnesty as part of a comprehensive approach to immigration and he worked with the democrats whenever possible to accomplish his goals.

Ronald Reagan is considered one of the greatest Presidents in the the history of the U.S. by a majority of Americans. His funeral services were viewed from beginning to end by millions of admirers from all parties and all walks of life. Yet an article about Reagan draws critics to this discussion who have no facts and use their opinions and big imagination to damage the legacy of a truly great man. His accomplishments are too numerous to list but he was adored by his friends and feared by his enemies and loved by most Americans.

I hope he doesn't go for deregulation of the banks and financial industry like his dad did that lead to the October melt down and followed in copy cat manner by W with worse results. If he is advocating more deficit spending and an added debt like his father left the country ($3 trillion added debt), Just say no!

If he is looking to build up the military as Obama is weak on defense, so the argument will go, how will he pay for a build up? No deficit spending again right! So it is either cut spending or raise taxes.

Ronald Reagan had the guts to tell the world peace thru strenght. History will show that Ronald Reagan brought down the iron curtain and put this country back on track as a military power.I served in The Marine Corp under Carter, when Reagan was elected I was ready to deploy and have the back up despite what the world thought. We miss you Ronnie and thank you Sir for being a real commander and chief , Semper Fi.

Never was I so proud to be an American as when Ronald Reagan was President. The first accomplishment of Regan was to see the Iran hostages released simply by the fact that the Iranians knew they were in for some serious pain had those hostages not been released. America became strong again as opposed to the weak kneed years of Jimmy Carter. The sad thing is that the national feeling of low esteem during the Carter years is making a comeback these days..

I think Ronald Reagan would cut taxes for the rich, close half the schools, remove funding for road and bridge repairs, lease out park land to developers, start an illegal arms trade to finance an illegal revolution, cut funding to police departments and then swear he can't recall doing any of it.

Where does this myth stem from that Ronald Reagan did so much for middle America? Reagan served the wealthy exclusively. As I recall, deregulation was Reagan's baby and it cost mainstreet American's jobs, pay increases, and America lost it's battle with foreign competition. An example is to remember the airline decline in this country cause by deregulation.

I was in the government when Reagan took office. He told all the agencies to freeze hiring. Unless they were signed on already no one could be hired. He froze all transfers and moves. If your household effects were in a warehouse they were not to go to the next job. You were stuck. We were told that we weren't getting new vehicles that we were to make do. The attitudes trickled down, old typewriters, old xerox machines etc. were just repaired. I wonder what he would have thought now with the expenditures for cell phones, blackberries, computers, intelligence agencies everywhere, 335 embassies, and bloated health care bills.

It's more than a tad pathetic. Surely the GOP is not so bankrupt for heroes and ideas that they need to invoke the myth of Ronald Reagan at every gathering. On the other hand, they just don't have a whole bunch of sterling folks from which to draw. Gotta say though that Michael Reagan was indeed resourceful in triggering the race issue about Hillary Clinton and the Berlin Wall. Or, was it just grabbing at straws or a bit of feeding off the bottom as we all know the GOP can do so well on such occasions.

It was Reagan & little Georgie Bush who increased the national debt the most. Clinton started paying it down and Obama has inherited the worst debt ever.
The Repubs removed regulations from big business, reduced taxes on those most able to pay while telling the rest of us that their new wealth would "trickle down" to us. Well, it didn't & hasn't. The wealth went to the new super billionaires and the recent new millionaires, and it went overseas along with our jobs, which was also enabled by the Repubs. The middle class is losing out and the poor are desperate. Wake up to reality, America, vote the Repubs out.

No one President has increased the national debt like Obama in a shorter amount of time. He continues to pile onto the debt without reducing spending at any level. No jobs are being created under his leadership, either. It is easy to go back to the past to look for blame, but he is the President now and the results of his agenda and policies are squarely on his shoulders.
