What she was offered by Secretary Vilsack isn't what I would want either. What the Secretary is offering Ms Sherrod, is primarily a function of the Dept of Agriculture's Equal Employment Opportunity Office, usually occupied by a person whose grade is probably commensurate with Ms Sherrod's, assuming Ms Sherrod is part of the Senior Executive Service or SES. Instead, I would like Secretary Vilsack to explain to Ms Sherrod why she can't go back her previous job. This type of scenario doesn't work for I have seen it happen before in other Federal Government agencies. Conflict between Ms Sherrod and the Director, EEO will most assuredly happen, then what? The EEO Director's job in the Dept of Agriculture is clearly spelled out in Title VII. What isn't spelled out is Ms Sherrod's new function. That said, the Department of Agriculture's Human Resources Director should recommend to the Secretary, that Ms Sherrod keep her former job, which would undoubtedly satisfy all concerned.

with Ms. Sherrod in reference taking time to reflect on what has happened. I think that if she does return to work, she should be offered the same job that she had before she was fired.
Has her job position been filled so quickly? I am sure that whatever her decision
is, that it will be what she deems best for her. I am glad that an apology was made,
and her Christian duty was to accept it, and she did that.
Gloria Kimble Anniston, Alabama
All she has to do is file a complaint with the Merit Systems Services Board. It may take a year or so however she will be reinstaded in her old job with full back pay, if that is her request.

If she were lucky enough to prove Malicious Intent and win a settlement, the spin machine would go into warp drive, raise mega bucks and use "The Race Card." Makes me chuckle when Hannity or one of the other "Entertainers" whine about how it isn't about race, when the Right complains about Pres Obama. Yeah, Right. This is sleeze no matter! What can one expect? Both sides do it and neither side is penalized.
July 24 2010 at 11:51 PM Report abuse Permalink -6 rate up rate down ReplyMs Sherrod was only a govt employee since 2009. As a retired govt employee I know from this that she was not a career employee (6 years). It is a lot easier to fire someone with her status than a careered employee. So to think that she would have anything invested in her USDA position, she does not. I would actually call for reverse discrimination if she was given a job that others would be competing for as she was given an unfair advantage due to her minority status. You see, there are other higher priorities in federal service than minority status, like veterans preference.

July 24 2010 at 9:51 PM Report abuse Permalink +20 rate up rate down ReplyI doubt very much as a private person she is enjoying the publicity and would rather become an "unknown" doing her job as she was content to do before this. She is an inspiration when she speaks of the evolution of her sensitivities towards others that most of us could learn from!
July 24 2010 at 10:51 PM Report abuse Permalink -10 rate up rate down ReplyI along with others have a problem with the time line of her firing , Now why would they even mention Glen Beck ? Why are they demonizing Fox news when all they did was report what at the time was a news story . It was the White House who jumped the gun along with one Fox talk show host called for her firing ? Sounds like a set up and someone needs to dig deep into this whole matter . I bet it will come out on a latter date . As far as the victim , Now she some kind of hero ? The whole thing sounds fishy .

Ms. Sherrod is probably considering more than one job offer. Ms. Sherrod is not a fool. She has a lot of time invested in being a public servant, and will not give up her potential for a position that equates to a higher government rating and higher salary, which will boost her retirement benefits. She is being wise in waiting and choosing when the time is right. She is turning adversity to her advantage just as all of us would. She certainly has that right.
July 24 2010 at 9:39 PM Report abuse Permalink -12 rate up rate down ReplySHIRLEY SHERROD MENTIONED IN HER WRITTEN LETTER, THE COLOR OF PEOPLE.
THERE WAS NO NEED FOR THAT, SHE SHOULD HAVE SAID THERE IS A PERSON IN NEED OF FINANCIAL HELP WITH THEIR FARM. NOT THE BLACK PERSON OR THE WHITE PERSON NEEDS HELP. SHE NEEDS TO BE FIRED JUST FOR MENTIONING THE COLOR OF PEOPLE. SHE HAS A JOB TO DO AS AN EMPLOYEE OF THE GOVERNMENT, JUST DO THE JOB, AND DO NOT MENTION THE COLOR OF PEOPLE.
She was not in the governments employ at the time she referenced!
July 24 2010 at 9:43 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyIf this is factual reporting ...I am impressed w/Ms Sherrod. To take the time to calm down think and analyze what has occurred and not rush into a decision.
Not many in Washington have the capacity to do this.
If I were Ms Sherrod I believe I'd take time to reflect also. I'd reflect on the NAACP and my president's administration for their willingness to jump to conclusions and throw me under the bus. You can blame the conservative blogger all you want but he didn't make the decision to censure her or force her to resign. He's not the first nor the last blogger/writer/reporter/journalist to play fast ane easy with the truth. There's a long list of victims of half-truths, innuendo and outright distortions, some well known(ask our last two presidents), some average Americans. In this time of "gotcha" politics and journalism, fueled by the thirst for power by all involved, it appears we've forgotten all about truth, honor and integrity. They are irrelevant, out of touch, and too constraining for today's sophisticates. What's important is getting what they want, regardless of how they get it. The NAACP didn't get "snookered". They got discovered. Politics makes strange bedfellows for sure. We don't need this kind of change.
