On Saturday, Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey once again "pleaded" (his word) with the Scottish government to reconsider its decision not to send officials to the hearings. His request was again rebuffed. (BP's lameduck chief executive, Tony Hayward, is also being pressured to attend the hearings to answer directly for BP.)Our failure to employ adequate statesmanship will likely hinder a compatible resolution to the Lockerbie problem.

We should worry more about whether this man did the crime or not -- there were concerns for MANY legal experts about the case and from their point of view he took a fall for our nation. If there is doubt, let the man be free.
July 28 2010 at 5:03 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've always wondered how we get away with the notion of "summoning" foreign leaders or citzens/Subjects of foreign countries, to appear before the US Congress (either House) as Scottish Justice Minister MacAskill implies - and rightfully rejects - on grounds that he is responsible to the people of Scottland, not America! (He pretty told us: "up yours"!
Also, why is it that our Congress can legislate for Americans while visiting another country, then take them to court for any violations in that country when they return home, even though the violation was of US law - not of the country they visited. (Before you get your panties up in a bunch - Congress so legislated primarily to discourage Americans to have sex with minors in other coutnreis - and I support the effort of protecting minors, but we should work on stronger laws and enforcement in and with those countries to protect their own children --- that, it seems to me, is that country's primary responsiblity --- American law and our Constitution should apply only for areas under its jurisdiction.
Obama sticking up for the USA WOW this is change. I am glade he did say something.
The UK letting killes go free early. Sad how the people we think our our friends will stab us in the back. I love The UK and I love the US, Looks like goverment sucks everywhere. this is 1st time I have to say good for you obama.
I dont thing he will do anything but its nice to see him stick up for the US.
Great ... yet another long-standing and close relationship beginning to unravel. Gotta love that Hope and Change.

July 27 2010 at 4:30 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI don't see what the problem is. Clearly this monster should be brought back to jail. Mistakes were made. OK Fix it. Even if he was in eminent danger of dieing, So die! Murderers don't get so called "mercy" release from prison.
July 27 2010 at 4:27 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is a real outrage how a murderer with the blood of 300 persons on his hand can get away with mass murder I'm furious They should have stood him up in front of a firing squad
July 27 2010 at 3:57 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyJust pointing out that this bombing occurred in 1988, not 1998.
July 27 2010 at 2:49 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis Lockerbie situation can be resolved with statesman diplomacy. So far, no one in Washington has demonstrated much statesmanship.
