President Obama Won't Attend Chelsea Clinton's Wedding

Well, now we know who won't be attending Chelsea Clinton's wedding on Saturday – wherever it takes place.

That would be President Obama. Asked at the end of Monday's White House press briefing if the president would be at the nuptials for Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky, Robert Gibbs answered "no." Previously, Gibbs had said he didn't know if the president would attend.

So, that much is clear, even if little else is. The wedding of the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Mezvinsky, himself the offspring of former politicians, will reportedly take place at the estate of John Jacob Astor, Astor Courts, in Rhinebeck, N.Y. But confirmation of that, along with many other details, has been hard to come by. The guest list is expected to number between 400 and 500 people, and the tab for the "wedding of the decade" could top $2 million.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

congratulations to the happy couple. wedding topping 2 billion- how much of that was tax-payers money-how many people could that feed-how many air conditoners could that buy for the eldery who can't afford them. Extravagrant - that is what's wrong with this world today. Lots of people have a lovely, memorable wedding for way less than that. That is more than one would earn in a lifetime. Much less spend for a one day event, even though it is for a very special and memorable occasion.

Obama did not need to be there. This was not, and should not have been, a political event. This was a beautiful wedding for two young people. That is all it should be. I am not an Obama fan, but that being said, these two young people had "their" day, and that was the right way to do it. I was never a Clinton fan either, but I am happy that this young lady had what she needed for her own day. She looked gorgeous, and I wish them well.

For one, Obama was not invited to the wedding - why would the Clintons do that to Chelsea and Marc? It's their day and inviting the current president would destroy the wedding.

Why is what they are spending on the wedding under scrutiny? Is anyone upset that Brad and Angie are purchasing a 40 mil home - that could feed a ton of starving people also -

They amassed their fortune and want to spend it on their daughter to make her day special - in addition to the security that is required to protect the former president - get over it folks -

And, can we move on about Obama not being born in this country? Speak intelligently - if you want to bash him, do some research on the decisions he's pushed through that you don't agree with - or his lack of attention on important issues in your opinion - don't just read one article and join the train just because you decided you don't like him but have no facts to back it up.

Hillary might beat Obama in the Democrat primary, but she would have a heckuva' time beating her Republican opponent whomever that ends up being. People remember all the shenanigans of the Clinton's and won't want a re-run of their style of governing. Would you???

For those of you that dont know, the incumbent runs unopposed in a presidential election. This means that here will be no other democrats in the race in 2012 but Barack Obama.

Just think of the businesses and the employee's that will benefit from this $2 million wedding! I think it's wonderful. Many people have such a hard time thinking beyond their forhead. Get a grip on it!!!

It's going to be a media circuis anyway so it shows a bit of class to let the focus be on the bride and groom. I suspect some serious discussions preceded this announcement.

So much ado about nothing that will change the world.

He and Michelle were invited -- that was announced weeks ago.

They felt their presence and all of the additional security would detract from Chelsea's day, so they graciously are staying home so the focus can be where it should be -- on the bride.

And interesting that the AOl moderation rules, which say personal attacks will not be published, are printing the kind of attacks on the president that are showing up here.

Can't we all be civil, if not kind?

The clinton's have a right to provide the best wedding their child wants. As for Obama, it would destroy the wedding. The security and town would be locked down. He is wise not to go to the wedding. I am surprised as he is such an audience and hound dog for applause and attention.
Hillary and Bill will be employing a lot of people and putting money into the economy. It sounds wonderful. Great location, and I wish them all the best.

Actually I'm glad that Obama isn't going to the Clinton wedding, I don't care if the Clintons spend 2 million or 100 million, that's their business. But if Obama goes to the wedding that will probably cost the taxpayers another million, Air Force One, the security and all the backup isn't cheap.
