Americans Say 'Melting Pot' Policies Once Made U.S. Stronger, But No More

A substantial majority of Americans continue to regard the U.S. as a "melting pot" because of the numbers of people from abroad that have come here, and they say the policies that encouraged that process during the great wave of immigration at the turn of the 20th century made the country stronger. But now, a plurality believe those policies are making the country weaker, according to a CNN/Opinion Research poll conducted July 16-21.

Sixty-nine percent say the phrase "melting pot" describes the U.S. today, a number that is similar among blacks, Hispanics and whites.

Sixty-two percent say the policies that were in effect at the time of the immigrant influx in the early 1900s made the country stronger. Sixty-four percent of both Hispanics and whites agree with that view, although blacks subscribe to it in smaller numbers (49 percent).

ImmigrationHowever, asked what effect those same policies and customs were having on the country today, 43 percent say they are making it weaker, 31 percent believe they make it stronger and 26 percent say they have no effect.

Whites believe these policies make the country weaker by a 45 percent to 28 percent margin with 26 percent saying they have no effect. Hispanics say they make the country stronger by a 35 percent to 32 percent margin with 33 percent saying "melting pot" customs have no effect, while blacks are split with 36 percent saying the policies make the country weaker, 35 percent saying they make it stronger and 30 percent saying they have no effect.

The margin of error is 3 percent for all Americans and 5.5 points for Hispanics and blacks who were surveyed.

The public overall has mixed views when asked about immigrants who have moved here in the last ten years. (The poll refers only to immigrants in general, and does not mention illegal immigrants).

Seven out of ten or more Americans believe immigrants are "basically good, honest people" and are hard-working. But about 6 out of 10 say they add to the crime problem and take away jobs from Americans, while 69 percent regard them as a burden on American taxpayers.

Blacks say immigrants add to the crime problem by a 53 percent to 42 percent margin, while Hispanics reject that idea by 53 percent to 42 percent.

Blacks believe immigrants take jobs from Americans by a 66 percent to 33 percent margin, while Hispanics disagree by 57 percent to 42 percent.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

I believe Khrushchev said "We will destroy you from within", I'm afraid that the way things are going, he might just be right.

There is nothing undesirable about encouraging immigration on the part of hard working,law-abiding, well educated, productive people of whatever race or national origin.
Is there?
On the other hand, folks not meeting those criteria are more problematic. That is one argument for patrolling the borders.

We used to have a "melting Pot" where immigrants assimilated to our way of life, learned English, gave up their former citizenship, worked hard and obeyed our laws. Now, we have a "Mosaic"..a fractured immigration system where people sneak into this country, demand welfare, housing, medical care, refuse to learn English, commit crimes (20,000 Americans killed by illegals every year). They take our jobs and hurl insults about country, they fly their flag and demand that we adhere to their way of life, customs and traditions. If we keep allowing these people to break our laws, we will lose everything that people want to come here for. WE NEED TO REALIZE THAT THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION IS PUSHING FOR AMNESTY FOR ONE REASON ONLY...TO GET MORE VOTES SO THEY CAN STAY IN POWER..AT THE EXPENSE OF AMERICANS.

If every argument against illegal immigration didn't seem so tinged with racist tone, much could get accomplished. People don't want to work with you when you seem hate filled.

Oops, shame on us for having allowed the greedy-with-all-the-tax-breaks for engaging in various degrees of indentured servitude for profit's sake. Got your money, sent your jobs away, filed bankruptcy and left you with the tab. Keep the faith.

False - the roman empire fell because it broke into 2 parts; one ceasar controlled the east while another controlled the west. The barbarians from the north (europe) sacked eastern rome while the Khans sacked western rome. Immigration was never ever an issue in rome. You were either a roman citizen or you weren't. The roman army became more and more filled with non-romans simply because they absorbed the armies they conquered.

It wasn't Anglo-Saxons, Africans, Asians or Arabs who made Mexico what it is today...it was MEXICANS.
Now these illegals(with the help of both dems and repubs..who don't want to lose those all important 'Latino votes") are PROTESTING in OUR streets...because we want them to be prosecuted. They don't want to be Americans...Americans get prosecuted for breaking our laws...they just want to be here to suck-up benifits and hand-outs. Do you think "viva la raza" translates into I love America????
GET RID OF THE POLITICIANS THAT PANDER TO LAW_BREAKERS that ain't their duty.

I don't think the native americans got a fair shake in the process? To them, nearly all of us are invaders

We all know these people are coming here for jobs. In the first twenty-six posts
related to this subject not a single one mentions punishing those that knowingly
hire illegal immigrants with false credentials. NOT ONE! WHY? They would go back if there was no work for them.

Calling an illegal parasite an undocumented worker is like calling a drug dealer an unlicensed pharmacist. A fairly famous Dem once said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country". What a difference now. Now it's a complete 180 and it's all simply, "Gimme, gimme, gimme". This puppy is being bled dry and it's time to stop it. It's what we can do for our country.

This country was made strong with certain kinds of immigrants- not just any old immigrant.
