Rep. Michele Bachmann Rebuked by Tea Party for Roy Blunt Endorsement

Tea Party members are furious with Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) for her endorsement of Republican Congressman Roy Blunt over state Sen. Chuck Purgason in the Missouri Senate primary.

Bachmann plans on traveling to St. Louis this weekend to campaign for Blunt, who has drawn the ire of the conservative Tea Party movement because of his vote for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the federal bailout of Wall Street firms.

Tea Partiers, who support the anti-tax Purgason, said they were "shocked" that Bachmann would back Blunt, adding "she has been grossly misled if she understands him to be a Missouri Tea Party candidate."

Bachmann heads the Tea Party Caucus in Congress.

"Tea Party participants believe the spending in Washington has to STOP," Tea Party groups said in a statement obtained by The Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "Roy Blunt voted for TARP and Cash for Clunkers. For Michele Bachmann to come to Missouri and give the impression that all the Missouri Tea Parties support Roy Blunt is an abomination of everything we have been standing up for."

It isn't the first time Bachmann, has been criticized by the movement that has hailed her in the past.

Last month, New Jersey GOP congressional candidate Alan Bateman said Bachmann "sold out the Tea Party movement" after she appeared in a robo-call on behalf of Republican incumbent Rep. Chris Smith.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

The Tea Party movement will not support anyone who openly stands with the big spenders in Washington. Whether they are Republican or Democrat doesn't matter. Smaller government, less spending, less national debt, and true representation of the people are the main goals of the tea party movement. It is not truly a party in a political sense.

Personally I feel that the major obstacle to a truly free America are the two political parties that literally consume the people at election time and then ignore them after elections.

Does anyone believe that teabaggers, which is the fringe right wing base of the GOP, actually have a chance in winning over rational voters? It's almost laughable that this lunatic fringe gets the medea's attention on a daily basis. LOL

When PD puts up an article about Michelle or the Tea Party the libs just come on in bunches to attack them. It's just not fair because we have no Coffee Party or One Nation, or whatever the name, to kick around. Like Air America was supposed to compete with Rush Limbaugh the Coffee Party and One Nation was supposed to compete with the Tea Party. Well they lasted about as long as a heat wave at a Global Warming convention in Denmark. It's just not fair.

The tea baggers get less and less relevant. Right wingers are going to vote right wing. They aren't winning anyone over but the lunatic fringe that live in bunkers waiting for the next conspiracy.

As long as you're losing them, we don't have to win them over, and you're losing them big time.

The liberal media keeps falsely insinuating that Bachman heads the Tea Party Movement, wich is a total fabrication. Bachman merely heads the TP Caucus in Congress. She can support whomever she likes in the movement, just as anyone else can.
