Second Missing U.S. Sailor Found Dead in Afghanistan

Searchers have recovered the body of a second U.S. sailor who went missing in eastern Afghanistan last week, NATO officials said.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jarod Newlove's body was found floating in water in the Logar province, The Washington Post reported. Officials said he had been shot three times and it appeared he was beaten.

Newlove, 25, and Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin McNeley, 30, disappeared Friday after they drove from Camp Julien near Kabul and ended up the targets of an apparent Taliban attack.

McNeley's body was found Sunday morning.

Newlove, of the Seattle area, and McNeley from Colorado, were part of NATO's counterinsurgency academy at Camp Julien, officials said.

NATO officials still want to know why the two sailors ended up in the Logar province, a dangerous area south of Kabul where the Taliban controls a lot of territory. Some NATO officials said they might have taken a wrong turn while trying to find their way back to Kabul, according to the Post.
