McCaskill echoed Brown's sentiments and said Metzler's plan to create a new grave tracking system, instead of modifying a system used by the Department of Veteran Affairs in its cemeteries, showed a lack of management. When I was in the military, we called people like those who were supposed to be in charge of Arlington "feather merchants". After all these years....nothing has changed....

They have respect for the men and women who offered their lives for our country. It is evident that the present system either does not work or they just don't care.

It doesn't take a multi million dollar computer program to generate a map and a spread sheet registry to keep track of who's buried where. Just about any high school student can do it with a laptop. What I am trying to fathom is. How does anyone know that the markers are mislabeled on that many graves and how did they determine that the graves were mismarked? Other than grave markers being damaged, a plot map like that used at cemetaries around the world should've been used. Since, the cemetary was started at the end of the Civil War, it's quite understandable that there would be many "Unknown Soldiers" buried there. And before anyone gets thier panties in a bunch, I am a Veteran of three wars and have nothing but respect for those who gave everything for our country! I just think that this may be getting blown out of proportion for political purpose by both sides and it shows you how inept the government is when they try to manage anything! I mean really, they've spent a couple of million dollars for a computer program to keep track of graves!
July 30 2010 at 5:40 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyMaybe they should take a good look at who works at the Department of Veteran Affairs as well as the Postal system & other government offices.
July 30 2010 at 5:16 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyIt's a shame to think that some of these same types of people probably work at the Post Office, the I.R.S., and many other government agencies. IT SHOWS.
July 30 2010 at 4:56 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI did not say enough, These people who are susposed to work at Arlington are to lazy to even think about doing the job they were hired to do.
July 30 2010 at 4:19 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyThe problems with grave ID at Arlington are directly the result of appointing
inept managers. High ranking career military officers may have zero management skills; and may lack the ability to adapt existing computer tracking methods.
Just maybe, the military realized it would be dangerous to have these men in charge of combat situations, so they were 'diverted' to spend the rest of their careers babysitting the cemetery. Arlington didn't deserve to be treated so casually by an agency of the US government
The men and women who gave their lives for this country did not fall down on their duty to serve this country. We, in this country, have let them all down. We must all be ashamed of this government mess that we have created. We let things go, and do not hold those in government accountable. We need to start to hold ourselves accountable as citizens of these United States and take an active part in holding all parts of this government accountable. It starts with all of us becoming active participants in local politics and staying in contact with your Senators and Representatives and "make time" to find out what is going on. We can't hold others accountable if we, as citizens don't hold ourselves accountable to be good citizens of this country. Put aside your "Republican or Democrat" names and become a good citizen first! I personally must hold myself accountable, and I hope that any of you reading this will do the same.

July 30 2010 at 3:26 PM Report abuse Permalink +5 rate up rate down ReplyHere is a politician who only joined the National Guard to firther is political career bllyaching about misplaced graves. One would think that a politician who actually served during a time of war would be more appropriate!
