Administration Buys $700,000 TV Ad Touting Health Care Law

The Obama administration has hired a familiar face to pitch its health care law to seniors in a new television ad.

Andy Griffith, of Mayberry and "Matlock" fame, appears in the 30-second spot being rolled out on cable channels starting Friday.

The 84-year-old actor tells seniors that "good things are coming" under the health care overhaul, including "free checkups, lower prescription costs and better ways to protect us and Medicare from fraud."

The $700,000 ad was paid for by Medicare and is part of an open enrollment campaign that will continue through the end of the year. Medicare says the goal is to educate seniors about new benefits available starting in 2011.

Polls show that seniors are more skeptical of the health care law than younger people because Medicare cuts allowed for much of the funding to expand coverage for the uninsured, The Associated Press reported.

The ad will air on channels popular with seniors such as the Weather Channel, CNN, Hallmark and Lifetime.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. What Congress promises Healthcare will be and cost, and what it will really be and cost, are clearly two completely different things. That is always something you can count on with Congress.

Agreed Chuck. But we have seen Congresses endless waste and pillaging other programs into fast approaching bankruptcy, and no one should expect this will be any different. Now Dems are insisting they will add back in a 'Public Option' - you know, because the government is so efficient - NOT! The best solution is to get rid of Dems in November, defund this quagmire, then start over with options that are, well optional, as well as efficient and affordable and keep the gov't out of teh Health Care delivery business.

The bill has some good points but the majority will not do what it was designed to do. affordable heathcare for all. The cost of private insurance will never be affordable unless the government tackles the causes.879.00 per month is hardly affordable even for a family making 80,000.00 not mention a family only making 40,000.00.As for working people that will not be able to afford heathcare insurance they will be forced to pay fines in the way of taxes. Also small companies with more then 50 employees has to provide heathcare insurance or pay fines. This alone will cause companies to cut their workforce to less then 50. This is nothing more then a plan to cover their wild spending spree.

Have you all lost your minds about the health care plan. Where does it say you cannot se your doctor, where does it say that "some czar" will dictate how much medical help you can get. It DOES SAY , that the insurance companies cannot deny you health care, AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN PAYING FOR YEARS, for an illness that requires lots of care and money. They also cannot deny you insurance for the PHONY 'pre-existing conditions" which the insurance companies use so often to deny coverage. This will also stop the insurance companies from givng HUGE BONUSE to the employees who can findthe most excuses for denying coverage, and this plan will close the 'Donut hole" for seniors who have huge prescription drug bills
Al this junk I read by so many mis-informed people (deliberately mis-informed by the insurance companies) is sickening. You really do need this meical coverage for so many of you ned METAL HEALTH CARE
If you are foolish enough to let the friends of the rich, the Republicans, run this country again, you can look forward to a few more proposals that they have been championing for years-----first they will try to privatize Social Security, turning over those funds to the greedy, dirty dishonest Wall Street crooks who are looking forward to BILLIONS in commissions
Next you can look forward to the complete repeal of Medicare, and the Republicans will deliver our senior citizens to the mercy of the-----guess who?----the insurance companies. Then DO NOT GET SICK, or they will find a way not to pay you, and pay themselves bigger bonuses WHILE YOU DIE

If the money that the insurance companies spent lobbying and fighting the health care bill were the income of an individual, their federal taxes would be a greater amount than the cost of this advertisement!

The new health care bill is very good for seniors especially those who have Medicare Part D. Costs should start to really come down next year.

This is nothing to compare with the scores of millions the insurance companies spent to defeat and scare people about the health care bill. Insurance companies should be very afraid since they are currently the ones managing the "death panels" and rationing health care to their insured while making hundreds of millions in profit that could be better applied to health care.

Using $700K paid for by Medicare is an outrage! We seniors cannot be bought. We are insulted that you think Andy Griffith would sway us because he is old. We actually read the law. We know we are getting screwed in this healthcare law. And we vote! That $700K could been used for health services for a needy and deserving senior. We do not waste money!

They picked Andy Griffith because of his honesty and integrity. He has proven time and again that if he doesn't believe in it, he won't say it.

To all those who heard the sky is falling- it's not. People like bltcarbiz,kenneth,main,w.m.slawson,mastechiedad,tisto laugh,etc.-attention please. Many U.S. citizens young and old are not AWARE of the FACTS concerning Health Care Reform. This maybe due to them listening to Fox news,G Beck, R.Limbal and other miss informed people who say the sky is falling. Kaiser Family Foundation latest poll now show 1/2 of the public support Health Care reform-could be because of the education provided by that $700,000-knowledge is power.
Points from the poll: Seniors awareness about specific provisions of the Health Care Reform law that affects Medicare is mixed. About 1/2 of Seniors are AWARE that the new law will result in preminum increases for some higher income Medicare beneficiaries (52%) and gradually Medicare "dounut hole" (50%). However just (33%) of Seniors are AWARE that Health Care Reform will eliminate Medicare co-pay & deductable for some preventive services.
A large number of Seniors MISTAKENLY believe Health Care Reform law includes provisions that cut some previously universal Medicare benifits & creates "death panels." Half of Seniors say this law will cut benifits that were previously provided to all people on Medicare & more than 36% INCORRECTLY believe the law will "allow goverment panels to make decisions about end-of-life care for people on Medicare.
The fact that Medicare actuaries predict the Health Care Reform Law will EXTEND THE LIFE OF MEDICARE by 12 years (from 2017 to 2029) only 14% of Seniors know this & nearly 1/2 (45%)of Seniors think reform laws will weaken the finacial condition of Medicare funds.
Maybe the goverment would not have to spend our tax money on educating the public if there were not so many people selling their soul for the almighty dollar and spreading so many LIES about Health Care Reform Law and many other
issues President Obama has worked so hard to provide to the people. I hope for thoes who are unaware you take the time to educate yourself at relable sources.
The info above came from Kaiser Family Foundation-www.kff.org You can contact AARP and other sources. GOD BLESS the U.S.A.

It is the elderly that are being hurt most by Obamacare. Medicare cuts and increased enrollment in medicaid will stuff waiting rooms and cause delays in getting appointments with the declining number of doctors that will treat those patients. The Obama plan for success is to throw money at everything and hope it works.
