Harry Reid, Sharron Angle Senate Race Back to a Tie in Nevada

After a poll showing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid moving into a modest if clear lead over Republican Sharron Angle following a barrage of campaign ads depicting her as a fringe candidate, the Nevada Senate race has tightened up again after Angle got on the scoreboard with ads of her own, according to a Mason-Dixon Research poll conducted July 26-28 for the Las Vegas Journal-Review/KLAS-TV.

Reid draws 43 percent of the vote to Angle's 42 percent with 9 percent preferring none of the choices before them and 6 percent undecided. The margin of error is 4 points.

Sharron Angle, Harry ReidAs she struggled to pull together her general election campaign after the hotly-contested GOP nomination fight, Angle raised $2.6 million last quarter -- compared to $2.4 million for the better-funded Reid -- which enabled her to air two ads, one of which hit hard at Reid for the state of Nevada's economy in which unemployment has reached 14.2 percent, the Journal-Review said.

A mid-July poll for the Journal-Review, conducted before Angle's ads, had put Reid out in front 44 percent to 37 percent. Two others -- by Public Policy Polling in mid-July and Rasmussen reports on July 27 -- had the pair statistically-tied. The Rasmussen poll found that both candidates suffered from high negatives, a clear result of the advertising campaigns.

"At least for the moment, (Angle) seems to have stopped the bleeding," said Mason-Dixon's Brad Coker. "Reid had the airwaves to himself for a while, and he drove her numbers down with the advertising. But that didn't necessarily drive his numbers up. There hasn't been a lot of good news to hang his hat on."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. I fail to see how you could draw the conclusion that Senator Reid was closing the gap on front runner Sharron Angel. I live in Las Vegas, and nobody but nobody has asked my opinion of who I thought would be the best representative for Nevada. If you're lucky, you might witness a Senate Majority Leader from the state in which you reside. Do you honestly think I'm going to cast my vote to inexperience, and comments which boggle the mind? I don't think so...

Senator Reid continues to have my vote...

Hello Richard

To all those questions such as " why would anyone in NV vote for Harry Reid again", or to the statment that "Harry Reid polling is lower than congress." I have one answer, Sharron Angle! This lady was,and is a political gift to Harry Reid. Once folks in NV get to know her he will win. And I'm sure he will happily "introduce the real Sharon Angle" to NV voters.

Hello Richard

In responce to wrmelton7 who wrote: "You need to re-read your history. Every President that lowered taxes ended up lowering the deficet." This is categorically and demonstratively wrong! Presidnet Reagan lowered taxes and the deficet increased substancially! The same thing happened after GWB lowered taxes in 2002. Mr Bush added over 1 Trillion dollars in 8 years to the national debt. We went from a budget surplus back to a deficet within 6 months of Bush's budget being approved with his tax cuts!

You need to re-read your history. Every President that lowered taxes ended up lowering the deficet.

When is she going to agree to have a debate with Reid? If she refuses than you know she can only critize Reid but can she say what she will do for Nevada, other than not bring in jobs or privatize Social Security and Medicare, and make Nevada our nuclear dumping ground?

Those who think Yucca Mnt could have created thousands of job, but in the same token it could cause millions of lives.

Harry Reid is saving the best for the last. Why show his cards now and give Angle a chance to change her venue again like she did when she first campaigned against Sue Lowden. When the rhetoric of her campaign showed her losing, she toned down and started to deny saying she said this or that. No problem, she's going to lose at the end.

Harry reid has opposed Yucca Mnt, which would create thousands of jobs; if you use obama's formula on "jobs created or saved" Yucca Mnt would create a million jobs.

Didn't harry reid say that loosing 35,000 jobs was great news? Of course the media gave him a do-over to explain his comment. Sharron Angle said that we should privatize Social Security; although does anyone think Social Security will be there when you retire, think again.
