Army Private Bradley Manning in Solitary as Investigators Expand Leak Case

Pfc. Bradley Manning, a "person of interest" in the leaking of thousands of secret Afghan war documents, was in solitary confinement in Quantico. Va. Saturday, amid signs the investigation of the disclosures has expanded.

Manning, who is being held in connection with an earlier leak of a classified video but has not been charged in the give-away of war reports made public a week ago, was flown from Kuwait to a detention center in Virginia where he was given a medical exam and now awaits clarification of his legal status, CNN reported Saturday.

The New York Times said Saturday a key figure in the case, a Sacramento-based computer hacker named Andrew Lamo, says he has information that Manning had the help of a civilian in setting up encryption computer software used to send classified information to WikiLeaks, a whistleblower website. That individual had ties to the website, Lamo said. Lamo, who gave up Manning to military authorities last May, is cooperating with investigators but wouldn't name the civilian, who apparently lives in the Boston area, according to the Associated Press.

The Army said the public disclosure of some 76,900 war reports has imperiled Afghans who have assisted the U.S. effort in the war against Taliban insurgents.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

I love how everyone is skipping over all the civilian deaths and just thinks that he shouldnt have said anything. Ignorance is bliss, right? What about hurting foreign relations? Why did those documents exist in the first place? Some of it reads like a 12 year old girl insulting people on facebook. Its sad for pvt manning that he broke the first rule of fight club and may end up in prison for the rest of his life for doing what was right.

This American Soldier has done great damnage to the security of the United States HOWEVER I believe he has cost hundreds of Afgan Civilian their lives or destroyed their families. I THINK THIS MAN SHOULD BE TURNED OVER TO THE AFGAN PEOPLE AND PUBLICLY STONED TO DEATH BY THE WOMEN OF AFGANISTAN. The same fate should be dealt out to the Australian who runs the web site that leaked the documents. This approach seems to satisify both offend parties and also discourages later actions of the same nature. As we have all come to know FREEDOM IS NOT FREE

Let me get this right. A Private First Class had access to 90,000 "Top Secret" documents that can bring down the American War Machine in Afghanistan? I can see how he might have come across the video but 90,000 documents which the Pentagon is now saying is incredibly sensitive? Maybe the army needs to review their policy. Did he have access to the "Launch Codes". Mike Mullen and Sec Gates say Wikileaks might have blood on their hands, I am pretty sure the Admr Mullen and Sec Gates have blood on their hands.
GET THE HELL OUT OF AFGHANISTAN and Iraq and Korea and Japan and Germany. Bring our troops home and put the money to use on something that matters.

Has anyone seen the report that I saw which was about The Wiki leaks guy Assange saying that he ran the tapes by the White House and got their approval to release them? I know I saw that report and it may have been on a news wire but of course the report said that the White House denied it. Then it all went silent and nothing more came of it but it would seem that somebody is lying and if it was Assange I feel we would know about it. Can anyone clear this up for me?

Joe: True: Assange has run everything by the white house before releasing it. The white house however, has deemed none of it safe for publication. The white house has been clear that Assange has asked them if things were safe to publish, and they've also been clear that they answered "no" each and every time.

Give this guy the Medal of Honor and charge all those that had the same information with Treason for knowing and not changing the "Stay the Course" policy and letting our youth and treasure be forfeited.

If Manning did this, he should be charged with treason and espionage and punished to the full extent of the law.

The leaks unnecessarily put Coalition forces and civilian informants at risk, disclosed little information about civilian casualties that was not known already, and did not give evidence of deliberate targeting of civilians or other war crimes.
