Immigration: Foreign Students Struggle to Stay in U.S. After College: Video Report

The controversy surrounding Arizona's new border control law has immigration policy in the spotlight. While it is impossible to ignore the estimated 12 million undocumented workers in the United States, it is relatively easy to forget a completely different sector of foreign workers anxiously waiting for reform: the thousands of international students who come to the United States each year to study at the nation's top universities. While student visas allow graduates to stay in the United States and work for up to 18 months after earning a degree, obtaining a green card or H-1 work visa is not easy.

A recent report by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development revealed that many countries around the world are easing immigration restrictions for highly skilled foreigners. The goal is to attract top talent from around the world to power domestic economies. This trend toward looser regulation for well-educated immigrants has not reached the United States. Click play below to watch a video report on the issue and the situations of several foreign students:

Business leaders like Bill Gates and Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York have argued that keeping out these workers is counterproductive. Bloomberg likened the policy to "committing economic suicide." Other proponents have pointed out that companies like Google, Yahoo and eBay were all started by immigrants.

Those opposed to loosening immigration restrictions argue that such opening of the borders could lead to a dependence on foreign labor. If those jobs were left vacant, they say, it would provide incentive for Americans to develop the skills to fill them.

With midterm elections looming in November, it is unlikely that any piece of immigration reform will receive attention before the end of the year.

Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. I'm glad it isn't easy. It should't be. I used to work with international students, and the tricks I knew of to keep them in the country! Amazing how many there were.

Bottom line: the point of studying in America is to do JUST THAT. It isn't to loiter about for years doing God knows what. Also, the ones I knew anyway (who were mostly from a certain country I will not name) took every opportunity to break the rules (for example, they worked when they weren't legally allowed to) and clearly had no respect for the United States, just our dollar.

So you participate to breaking of US immigration laws by working with international students who are only allowed to work part time on campus.

Note: As a German citizen I have no intention to stay after getting my PhD. Even if I get a free green card I wouldn't stay. Life standards are much lower than Germany and many western and northern European Union countries. But universities for grad studies are excellent.

These international students took a seat an American kid could have used to better themselves and then want to compete with them for a job. These students were brought here to better themselves, return to their countries, and better their countries with jobs, teaching, medicine etc. After ten years if they want to apply for residency let them wait in line. Our young boys who could not afford to get into college went into the military to obtain a way to get into college let's make it easy for our people first. Laws are on the books for a reason I'm tired of those who use the education visa to sneak into the US.

I think it is really sad that the United States doesn't use international resources as they should. I met my husband while he was working as a teacher in the States through a cooperation with the Spanish government. He stayed one year in at the district, but because of the economic crisis that most school districts are facing, he was let go with a number of other people. We married the following year, but to our amazement the US government wouldn't let him stay based on a clause in the visa saying that he would have to return to his country of origin for two years. This really gave me no other choice but to leave the US with my husband and we are now in Spain where there is a 20% unemployment rate, yet I have a job because the Spanish government understands the need for highly-skilled workers.
Both my husband and I are bilingual, highly-skilled teachers with master degrees.
Do I plan on coming back? FOR WHAT?

It is a sad day when these college graduates, after years of study here, still do not understand our laws. What all these Ivy League schools don’t teach American law, history or citizenship? Why do they think they can just overstay their Visas and act like it’s OK? I tell you this is I was in charge NO ONE would be allowed in from any country for any reason for at least 5 years. Period. End of discussion. Nadda. Zip. Zero.

how many years did you stay in Germany? probably you were a tourist or short term visitor. because you should have a temporary resident card and that is the only thing you must always carry with you.
I have to carry passport-visa-I94-2 PAGES I 20 and all these documents only shows your immigration status when they were issued. A Local police cannot know your status with just those papers. Border patrol or any authorized federal officials can confirm your status. I have a AZ state driver license and the expire date is the date when my visa expires. Why AZ state driver license doesn't satisfy them.
By the way tourists must always carry their passport all the time, I am talking about people living here legally for a long time.

Being accepted into a US college or university isn't the same as applying for legal immigration into the United States. Students shouldn't expect that upon graduation they'll skirt the law and somehow be at the head of the line when it comes to who can come to America permanently. If graduates want to live and work in America, then they need to go home and apply to enter the country legally like every other immigrant.

Shoot!, every time I buy something at the store I have to PROVE who I am, to get a credit, rent an apartment, apply for a job, stay in the hospital, see a doctor, make out a will, cash a check, and so on, I HAVE TO PROVE WHO I AM!!!! Why not someone who is suspected of being here illegally??

Vivalafrance, 'legal' simply means to follow the process established by law to enter and remain in this country 'lawfully.' Immigrants fill out paperwork, pay fees, and wait for their citizenship to be approved. They also learn the language, take a citizenship test, and pledge allegiance to this country. For those people who go through the process, WELCOME! For those who don't go through that process, steal social security numbers and identity belonging to a US citizen, I hope they get caught and sent back to their homeland.

After fall of Berlin Germany in WWII American Forces are in a race against Russians to capture German rocket experts and scientists. Why? because America do not have the rocket technology for its future space programs such as NASA. Albert Einstien is a prime example of how America's physic, math & science benefited by the likes of him. Even today this hold true. Technology giants like Google,Intel,Yahoo are founded by new blood of immigrants...Immigration issue should not be one size fits all like Obama healthcare. Some immigrants are nation builders and others are walfare receipiants. They are not equal in any measure, thus should treated differently according to their values to America.

Let's find a comprehensive solution for immigration. It is not just about fences. Many people come here legally and do not go home. There needs to be guest worker provisions and for some a path to citizenship. Let's work on this together and while doing so have a bit of compassion for other human beings
