It's President Obama's 49th birthday on Wednesday, Aug. 4, but the commander in chief has a full plate of speeches, award giving, congressional peacemaking and travel on Air Force One to attend to before any presents are opened. Given the amount of
brouhaha surrounding his Special Day, however, we expect cake, balloons and impromptu renditions of "Happy Birthday" to occur at some point during the day. Here's what's on tap:
9:30 a.m. -- The president receives the Presidential Daily Briefing in the Oval Office.
10:00 a.m. -- Meets with senior advisers in the Oval Office.
11:05 a.m.-- Delivers remarks at the AFL-CIO Executive Council Meeting at the Washington Convention Center. Expect a mention of the "
driving the car into the ditch" metaphor and the choice between "D" and "R" this November. Bonus points if the prez mentions the
okee-dokee.
12:00 p.m. -- Has lunch with senators in the Roosevelt Room.
1:00 p.m. -- Press Briefing by Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.
2:15 p.m. -- Delivers remarks and presents the 2010 Citizens Medal to 13 winners from across the country in the East Room. According to the White House, the award is for those who have "performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens."
3:10 p.m. -- Meets with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in the Oval Office. Possible
raised voices and dull thuds if the controversial Bush tax cuts are broached.
4:00 p.m. -- Departs the White House en route Andrews Air Force Base.
4:15 p.m. -- Departs Andrews Air Force Base en route Chicago.
6:00 p.m. -- Arrives in Chicago. Presumably blows out a large cake with 49 candles on it and remarks on the amount of
gray hair he's gotten since last year.
