The congresswoman also faced her toughest opponent ever Tuesday night in Hansen Clarke, an Ivy League-educated Michigan state senator with a compelling personal story and a slogan telling voters "It's Time for a Change." The depth and breadth of corruption and mismanagement in Detroit politics are of epic proportions. With the notable exceptions of Dave Bing and Justice Dennis Archer, I am hard pressed to name one Detroit politician of character.

Hanson Clarke has done an excellent job in the Michigan Legislature and his credentials will make him successful representing Michigan in the U.S. Congress. Clarke ran a clean campaign in the Primary and,to me, this signigles a new day in Michigan Politics.

Kilpatrick faced a perfect storm: a generalized anger toward incumbents; a specific restlessness about anything "Kilpatrick"; and the perennial problem of poor voter turnout. As one of her former constituents, I think she did an admirable job in her role, but the country is in a transition. Names like Kennedy and Kilpatrick -- once guaranteed to garner votes for generations -- are giving way to the "new" Americans. While most of us were focused on black and -- to a lesser extent -- Hispanic -- minorities here in metropolitan Detroit, other burgeoning groups silently, and slowly, have made their presence felt. Young Albanians, Croats, Serbs, Bangledeshis, etc. have worked hard, worked their way through college and worked themselves to a place at the "Big Peoples'" table. It is a wonderfully dynamic, continuing part of the American drama.
