Sarah Palin's Endorsements Ruffle Locals

A couple of weeks ago, she upset the conservative New Hampshire Union Leader. Now, Sarah Palin's endorsements are shocking many Republicans in states like Georgia and Maryland.

In Georgia, the former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate endorsed Secretary of State Karen Handel for governor over former Congressman Nathan Deal (the runoff is Aug. 10), prompting Georgia's speaker pro tem to note that Palin is "a nice lady" who has spent less than 24 hours in Georgia.

Wednesday's Palin's endorsement of Brian Murphy for Maryland governor over former Gov. Bob Ehrlich surprised lots of folks. Having been raised in Maryland, I think it's probably safe to say that Ehrlich is as good as it gets. He may not be the perfect conservative, but he is likely the only Republican who can win in November (though in a post-Scott Brown world, who knows???).

Palin's endorsements are somewhat unpredictable, and span the gamut. In some cases, she is giving the nod to serious conservative outsider candidates who can win, but as the Washington Post's Aaron Blake also recently noted,
Palin has backed several other distinct long shots, including [Washington senate candidate, Clint] Didier, Miss., House candidate Angela McGlowan, California House candidate Star Parker and New York House candidate John Gomez.

Interestingly, of late there has been a debate over whether Palin's endorsements even matter. Reinforcing this notion, Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.), a Palin-endorsed candidate, lost his Senate primary bid on Tuesday, though it is likely Palin's endorsement helped him gain some points. Still, it wasn't enough to help him win.

As I recently noted when discussing Sen. Jim DeMint's endorsements, there's also the danger that well-intentioned national figures don't fully understand parochial nuances before they endorse. As such, their backing can have unintended consequences.

What is more, in today's environment it's likely that flashy young conservative candidates may benefit from these endorsements at the expense of solid, experienced, elected conservatives --- who have been paying their dues. And in the case of Palin, some believe that female candidates ("Mama Grizzlies") are more likely to get the nod over male candidates.

Regardless of whether a Palin endorsement helps candidates, it is clear she is making enemies -- as well as friends -- around the nation. This, of course, would be a factor if she seeks the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.

As one smart operative recently told me, endorsing in primary campaigns can be risky. If you're not careful, you often make more enemies than friends . . .

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

God forbid she upset the establishment, right or left. She is just a voice of one, but WE, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE are coming for our Country and the Progressives in both parties feelings be damned.

The question is, are tea-party supporters intelligent enough to ignore Sarah when she endorses someone they KNOW is a loser? Unike the folks that blindly listen to Rush and other Obama-haters, common-sense voters must not condemn local candidates simply because they escape her attention!

Ever since she endorsed John McCain for his recent re-election bid to the senate, I will have nothing to do with her.

John McCain is a moderate democrat !! She also endorsed our corrupt Governor Rick Perry so this shows me it's politics as usual with her.

Just like diabmang said, Palin doesn't read up or otherwise study anything. For every upcoming election, she probably just picks the most Anglo-sounding name or phones the candidates to see who will sing her praises the loudest, then endorses that person. Wouldn't you love to see Levi run against Sarah for some office and beat her??

As everyone already knows, Sarah does not do her homework. So, how can she make these endorsements so freely?

I think it's quite strange(ludicrous) that a person that left their job, in their state, moves about the country (essentially) telling people who to elect for (supposedly) important jobs in their state. Let me cut to the chase, exactly who pays her and exactly why? I've heard plenty of rumor and conjecture, but I'm not sure what is true, anymore. Also, why doesn't she mind her own (and her state's) business and let every one else elect officials the old-fashioned (fallible, sure) way...by choosing who they want/like/need, rather than having this psuedo-celebrity give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. As far as I'm concerned, she's bought and paid for, as is whomever she endorses. Thank you, Kate

I just realized that some people are voting against my response. That is, in this country, your right. I just wonder, what it is I've said that you're opposed to? You certainly can't accuse me of supporting any political party, candidate or ideology, I've not inferred any of those. You can't say that I don't like S. Palin, as I've not said that one way or the other, either. I wonder if the opposition is just the same people that oppose anyone speaking their mind/the truth? Wouldn't that be too sad, to think that someone would oppose my right (as a right) to speak, for no other reason than they don't like the topic I choose to speak about. Thankfully, that's why our forefather's crafted the doctrines that make the U.S. such a fabulous country. God Bless you all. Kate
