Target Boss Apologizes for Political Donations That Sparked Boycott

The CEO of Target stores is apologizing for his company's donation to a political group backing a conservative gubernatorial candidate in Minnesota who is against same-sex marriage. The donation led to a boycott of the retail giant.

Gregg Steinhafel wrote employees to say he was "genuinely sorry" over the way Target handled the $150,000 contribution to MN Forward, The Associated Press reported. Steinhafel said the company would establish a review process for future political donations.

MN Forward is a pro-business group that has endorsed and is paying for ads for Tom Emmer, whose Web site defines marriage as a "union between one man and one woman" -- a view common among politicians in both parties. Emmer also angered some voters by contributing $250 to a Christian rock band called You Can Run But You Cannot Hide that has expressed anti-gay sentiments.

Steinhafel said the contribution was designed to support Emmer's stance on economic issues, according to the AP. Ads purchased by MN Forward were focused on budget policy, not social issues
.

"While I firmly believe that a business climate conducive to growth is critical to our future, I realize our decision affected many of you in a way I did not anticipate, and for that I am genuinely sorry," Steinhafel wrote.

He added, "The diversity of our team is an important aspect of our unique culture and our success as a company, and we did not mean to disappoint you, our team or our valued guests."

Gay rights activist cut up their Target credit cards and demonstrated outside stores in Minnesota and elsewhere to protest the company's donation. The boycott got a major boost on Tuesday when MoveOn.org, the Democratic political advocacy group, said it would help with the petition drive to spread the word.

On Facebook, activists started a page called "Boycott Target Until They Cease Funding Anti-Gay Politics." Meanwhile, a second group with a similar name advocated a protest of the electronics retailer Best Buy because it also contributed to MN Forward.

"Target has always been a really supportive workplace for GLBT people," said Monica Meyer, head of OutFront Minnesota. "I think people are feeling a little betrayed by the company . . . seems really contradictory to how they've acted in the past."

After Steinhafel's letter was released, Meyer said, "We appreciate they are taking this really seriously."

Earlier this week Steinhafel said the retailer's support for the gay, lesbian and transgender community is "unwavering."

Target, Steinhafel said, "has a history of supporting organizations and candidates, on both sides of the aisle, who seek to advance policies aligned with our business objectives, such as job creation and growth. It is also important to note that we rarely endorse all advocated positions of organizations or candidates we support, and we do not have a political or social agenda."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. I wonder how some would have felt if they gave money to a candidate that was a KKK member. It's all the same and a company should want any and all customers and to back someone that is basically a bigot in his or her views toward any one group of people is just plain wrong. It's a shame that people don't realize that everyone in this country of ours should be equal in the eyes of the law and everyone should enjoy the same rights as everyone else. I don't think same sex marriage is going to hurt any of us one way or the other and unless someone is infringing on our rights then why should we care. World would be a better place if we all accepted everyone for who they are and not who we want someone to be. Read some of the postings as all I see is hate and hate never helped anyone and for the most part destroys the hater. Live and let live.

This is the power of the people!......When big business attempts to legislate the lives of the average Amercian they should be punished for their actions. There's plenty of other places to get the same service and products.

MORE AMERICANS SHOULD target TARGET.....LET'S MAKE THEM AN EXAMPLE FOR CORPORATE GREED.

Isn't this big business corporate funding of elections allowed by the policy setting Conservative Supreme Court? I find it repugnant behavior and the executive should fall on the sword (resign) for this judgment slip. He's paid big bucks not to make judgment slips and as a result of his actions, the shareholders may be holding a less valuable stock.

Why would a business owner not give $ to a pro-business group? We cannot be so narrow minded to focus on one issue in our political choices.

Hey target, keep your money out of the polotics. You want to give money away? Give too all the unemployed people by giving them a gift card to buy food or household items from your store.

Did you feel the same way when a bogus group tried boycotting Glenn Beck? Probably not.

Another "gimme something for nothing" type. Target has the right to give a donation to whomever they deem worthy. Gee, would there be all this upheavel if they gave money to the gays? I think not. They would be highly esteemed for their "bravery" and foresight. Give me a break. Stop demanding everything for nothing. Earn it, as the Smith-Barney commercial used to go.

Wake up conservatives. Maybe we should take into consideration for some boycotts of our own. This tactic has always been effective for the left. Maybe we should start using this for our causes. Don't go see that Robin Williams movie. Don't buy that Dixie Chicks CD. Be more aware of who owns what. Don't do business with any company that champions liberal causes. I wish there was a place to easily find this type of information.

Maybe we should just get all Corporations and interest groups out of the political process. They are not Citizens! Why do we think they have the same rights as you and I? Then we wouldn't have to think about boycotting those on the other side. Wait a minute....we already tied that but the right-wing of the Supreme Court decided that we already have the "Best Government Money can Buy"

This store takes my money (and I shop there a lot) and contributes to conservative causes supported by their CEO. And he says he is a supporter of the GLBT community but financially supports those that aren't? I bet he’s a supporter of their hard green cash. Is this the conflict between talking the talk and walking the walk? Frankly I think it is corporate suicide to contribute to ANY political group that takes on such controversial social issues. I don't buy Dominos pizza because of their CEO's contributions to anti abortion groups. It is his own money he uses, but that doesn’t matter to me. He is very personally affiliated to these anti abortion organizations and since I know that I won’t buy his product. I believe that a woman has the right to choose and anyone who finances the opposite view won’t get my hard earned money. He also opposes birth control. (Don’t you love their fidelity to total control of a woman’s reproductive rights?)

To both of these businesses – stay out of other people’s lives and choices. It isn’t your business….retail is your business.

He gets to do what he wants ---- but I and my friends (and now my adult children) won't support these businesses. Back to Kohl’s and Pizza Hut....until they screw up.
