Charlie Rangel to House: 'I Am Not Going Away'

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) had a message for his fellow Democrats in the House who have not-so-quietly wished that he and his high-profile ethics charges would disappear before the November midterm elections.

"I don't want anyone to feel embarrassed or awkward. Heck, if I was you, I might want me to go away, too," he said. "I am not going away."

In an extraordinary speech on the House floor, Rangel held forth for more than half and hour to defend himself. He said there is "not one scintilla of evidence" to prove him guilty of the violations he is accused of and demanded that the ethics committee publicly try him so that he can answer the allegations. He warned his colleagues that if the ethics committee's process can endanger his career, it can endanger theirs, too.

"Don't let this happen to you," Rangel said to the members of the House. "Don't walk away because it's convenient that I disappear."

The ethics committee formally charged Rangel with 13 counts of violating the rules of the House, including that he used public resources for personal gain, omitted hundreds of thousands of dollars on his financial disclosure forms, violated the House franking statute, and engaged in conduct "reflecting discredibility on the House."

As he continued, Rangel revealed that he has paid more than $2 million in legal fees related to the charges against him. But beyond wanting to end the lawyers' bills, Rangel said he was speaking up on Tuesday because his September primary election will come and go before the ethics committee holds a hearing in his case. "I am not asking for leniency. I am asking for exposure of the facts," he said.

The Harlem lawmaker apologized to the House leadership for the ongoing scandal, but he defiantly warned that he will not admit to any wrongdoing.

"If I can't get my dignity back here, then fire your best shot at getting rid of me through expulsion," Rangel said. "I deserve and demand a right to be heard."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. I think he should be judged by us , not his FELLOW WORKERS. and if found Guilty,
leave office and forfiet all pay and retirement. but we know that'll never happen (sadly)

I tried to watch Rangel talk on the Floor yesterday, and it was painfully evident that he was endlessly rambling on and on about what, I still can't figure out what was the point of it all. Other than daring them all to gag him.
This is what happens when One is endlessly re-elected, inevitably they begin to consider themselves above reproach.
Rangel is in good company with Maxine Waters.

A desparate man, defending his bad behavior. I felt sorry for him rattling on and on for over a half hour. Pathetic. This is what represents people of the United States. Wow, and it's not limited to his district, people like him are strewn all over the map and we have voted for them time and time again.

I believe Rangel is right. They are just stringing it out until the election. They really don't care if he is guilty or not. They need to go ahead with a vote, the gov. is so slow and corrupt that he would not probably get a fair hearing anyway. Look what happened to Ted Stevens. He went through the ethics committee, ruined his career, then they decided he was fine. Too late.

Rangel, decide which image fits you best. True, you are entitled to a fair and impartial examination of the facts, but if they should dig deeper and find more during the investigation, then your legacy is greatly tarnished. You can leave now and simply walk away quietly and they will not prosecute you (after all, you know too much about them). Or, you can stand and fight, hoping that justice will perceive you the same way that you perceive you. If you are right, then fight. But if any of the charges hold water ... it might be time to clean out the office.

The entitlement that way too many Democrats have with their attitude of not having to answer to the very people who put them in office; that is, the constituencies who gave them a pretty comfortable life style of the rich and famous, and their thinking they don't have to follow the same laws that we all have to adhere to (lest we be thrown under the jailhouse). This attitude seems to have escalated since the national election of November, 2008, too.

Mr. Rangel, please consider retiring. The allegations against you are immense and calls in to question the integrity of the Democratic party. Giving forty years of your life and loyal public service is something to be proud, but the charges cast a pall upon you, please depart with dignity.

Charlie, Charlie, Charlie what a wonderful speech you go to the floor to appeal to you fellow cronies to accept the fact that its ok to break the law because you are above the law why hell you even made some of the laws you broke. What a fool looks like when they get caught with their hand in the cookie jar.If I as the common man had done what you have done I would already be in jail. It seems that for you and others lies are truths for you. why is it that a senator or congressman cant tell the truth anymore.Try it some time it will set you free.Join the American people and stop your arrogance you are not above the law you should have been honest in your endeavors. Instead you decided to get by without following the same rules as the rest of us you of all people should have known better you should watch yourself the court jester begging for forgiveness. what a shame. but you truly deserve what you get. My only hope is that the person that replaces you has the common sense to work for the American people and not try to take advantage of the system as you have done. What a waste what a waste.

HOW IS IT THAT EVEN THOUGH THE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS MAKE A VERY GOOD SALARY, THEY ARE ALL MILLIONAIRS? i DOUBT VERY SERIOUSLY THAT CHARLIE RANGEL WAS A MILLIONAIR BEFORE HE WAS A CONGRESSMAN. IS HE SO GOOD WITH MANAGING MONEY THAT HE WAS ABLE TO SAVE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS DURING HIS TENURE IN CONGRESS? DO YOU KNOW OF ANY CONGRESSMAN THAT IS NOT A MILLIONAIR?
