Immigration: House Passes Border Bill for More Federal Agents, Drones

Call it a rare bipartisan moment if you like, but the U.S. House easily approved a $600 million bill Tuesday authorizing more than 1,000 additional border agents and surveillance drones to patrol the border with Mexico.

With the House back from a break for a one day session, the legislation was passed quickly under suspension of usual rules -- meaning Republicans could have blocked the fast-paced action. But they chose not to, and the measure sailed through on a voice vote. Although it is identical to a version approved by the Senate last week, the two bills must still technically be reconciled, meaning the plan can't go to President Obama for his signature until next month since the Senate is on summer recess.
Unmanned surveillance droneOnce it becomes law, money will be freed for more border guards, a bolstering of Drug Enforcement Agency, ATF, U.S. Marshals and FBI units, and also for additional unmanned drones to monitor movements along the southern border. The Senate decided to pay for the plan by raising fees on foreign-based personnel companies that bring workers to the United States, often from India.

The scaled down bill is a far cry from the comprehensive immigration reform that Obama has repeatedly sought from the Congress. But it is a reaction to demands that the federal government take stronger steps to deal with illegal immigrants crossing into the U.S. from Mexico.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Maybe the 600 million would have been better spent if we would build a 50 foot high concrete wall. Remember the movie, "escape from New York". It could be tapered larger at the top than the bottom, making it difficult to climb over. The only openings would occur at the border stations.

This would be good for at least 100 years, not just until the 600 million dollars runs out.

On a recent trip to the border in California I observed a steel panel wall about 20 feet high running along the border for miles. There was no razor wire or even barbed wire on top of the wall. A ladder and a piece of rope and you are over the wall. What is the reason they don't put razor wire on top of the border wall and rows of razor wire at the base of the wall?

I find it amzing some bills get signed right away, so that all the stuff that was added could go through quickly. This very important thing gets pushed back a month.............at least a month. Of course during that time more people will crossing int America and live off us.

You can buy 15 small airplanes (Cessnas) for the price of one drone and the Cessnas don't require a crew of contractors from the factory for maintenance like the drones do. The only purpose of a drone is to protect a live pilot from being shot down which is not a concern for border patrol. A drone still requires a pilot only in a windowless room instead of in the cockpit. So why are we diverting money that could be used for boots on the ground to purchasing drones instead of a cheaper alternative? Maybe this explains it - (from Wikepedia)
General Atomics was the single biggest corporate underwriter of Congressional trips between January 2000 and June 2005, according to a nine-month study of congressional travel disclosure forms. The company spent more than $660,000 on 86 trips taken by members of Congress, their aides and families. Most of that was spent on overseas travel related to the unmanned Predator spy plane made by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems.

Why can't they under stand ILLEGAL IS ILLEGAL. Saying undockmented is like saying a drug dealer is a unlicensed pharmist. Obama will do any thing to stay in office and if he does the good old USA is in for a world of hurt and will no longer exist as we know it. HE HAS GOTTA GO and the sooner the better.

So the liberal argument to Arizona that securing the borders had to be part of larger immigration reform was a lie? It's clearly obvious this is just a political move for the democrats before the mid-term election a few months away. More agents and "montioring" yet nothing to enforce laws to deport illegal immigrants already here. It will be interesting to see how many of the were let go by ICE instead of being deported; I'm sure we will here that report very soon (before the mid term elections as well). How about a law that removes federal funding from "Sanctuary Cities". As it stands these cities are getting huge chunks of TARP money while they continuously vioate US immigration laws. additional funding should be going to SECURE the borders, not add to the failures already present!

The problem is much larger then the borders. There is no other country in the world that mandates schools to deal with two differant languages. This cost to the school systems is huge.If some do not want to learn the language then they should find some place else to live. There is no reason for us to have to learn their langauge. If you want to be here learn ENGLISH.

The Dems knew that they could not get the bill for the teachers union funding passed and that the bill for the teachers would not have been reason enough to pull congress off their break. This border bill was tacked onto the teachers bill to get congress back in to vote and get the teachers bill through because anything for boarder control funding would go through quick because it is a HOT issue just in time for elections. So be prepared cause on the campiagn trail they will be preaching HOW WE STRENGTHENED OUR BOARDER. Now since the other troops haven't been deployed to the boarder yet and they were mainly going to be at desks jobs are the troops and added agents going to be allowed to do their jobs, can they shoot to kill if threatened OR will this be a farce and they end up just like the two boarder control agents that are still sitting in jail for doing their job?

In the last year more people have been turned back from the border and more arrested than at any time during the Bush years. That is a fact. Maybe to you and the conservatives making sure the states are able to pay their teachers, firemen, and police is not reason enough for them to come back but then again if it was a vote to help the rich I am sure they would be there with bells on.

Simple answer to both illegals crossing our borders and our huge debt. Bring the troops home from Godforsaken unwinnable wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and put them on all our borders to protect our national security. End of story.
