State of Texas Sues BP Over Air Pollution

The state of Texas has filed suit against BP and, no, it's not related to the oil spill in the Gulf.

The Lone Star State's attorney general accuses the oil giant of illegally emitting nearly 500,000 pounds of air pollutants at its Texas City refinery for more than a month in the spring of this year, The Associated Press reported.

Texas blames shoddy operation and maintenance on the part of BP for what the state called 46 days of illegal pollution at the facility near Houston.

The state's Commission on Environmental Quality accused BP of multiple "egregious" violations and said the company has a poor compliance history, the AP said. The regulatory agency turned those findings over to the attorney general, who filed the lawsuit.

The company could be fined up to $25,000 per day for each violation. BP hasn't commented on the suit.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

No one seems to be commenting on the problem. BP received over 700 safety violation in the last 5 years. They were fined over $20M for those. Their culture of lax safety and under-maintenance have lead to a refinery explosion and several deaths and the Gulf Oil Spill with its associated deaths. In the same time period, Exxon had 2 violations. Sun and Citgo 7. They are unmatched. I might add that no one else had ANY deaths. BP needs to be fined until they change their culture. They are giving the good, non-cheaters a bad name. You might ask how they got to be bigger than EXXON in such a short time. They don't re-invest in their facilities, that's how.

They need to be looking in the oil fields at all the so called abandoned wells that are not producing and pull the pipe and properly plug the wells , but they seem to be looking the other way as usual, spend the big money to drill but don"t spend any to clean up your mess .
