Kelly McDonald, a professor of communications at Arizona State University, uses the book in his classes. Emotionally charged language motivates people to act, "so slogans become ways to motivate the ideologically aligned or to push the ideologically neutral to act," says McDonald. He cites among the most successful President Reagan's '84 campaign slogan, "Morning in America," and the way he re-branded a weapon of war, the MX Missile, as "the peacekeeper." Barack Obama's "hope and change" slogan during the 2008 campaign built on what Reagan did, and brought hundreds of thousands of new voters to the polls.Good, smart article. Well thought out. Let's see more like it.

August 13 2010 at 11:56 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyPutting Reagan and Obama together in an article is an insult to Regan. Obama isn't, can't be, and will never be what Reagan was as a leader for this country.

OH YOU DID NOT KNOW THIS OR DID NOT HAVE A DEMOCRAT TO BLAME, OR IS IT HIDDEN FROM PEOPLE LIKE YOU IN SOMETHING CALLED BOOKS.
August 13 2010 at 10:03 AM Report abuse Permalink -2 rate up rate down ReplyAre you people nuts? Reagan is the one who started America's decline into the messes we have now. He hated the middle class and working Americans. He started all this union busting because he thought only the rich should have power. He jacked up costs and taxes when his rich buddies saw average Americans making big money in the real estate business. And don't give me that baloney about him being "the great communicator". If you look at his old speeches, he never said anything substantial but, being an actor, he hoodwinked all of you.

Did it really take that many words to say Obama needs another slogan? And obviously I'm not the only American who wants more than a "slogan" president. I know this is hard to believe, but actions speak louder than words. Reagan actually followed through with his words and Obama never will.
August 13 2010 at 9:42 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyExperience is the big thing . Honesty and truthfulness might help . To want to change something does not mean it will happen . But if you really try to make it better you can be respected for it . Reagan had reganomics the present administration has flunked economics 101. You can't tax people to death and expect them to work to help . You can't give everyone a break you have to have qualified people who know how to run their businesses and if they fail then another entrepeuer will pick up the slack as long as there are incentives to do that . We are in trouble because of a house and senate that has bowed to the will of the president. Bashing Bush is no answer He had a house and senate against him the last two years he was in office. We need to look at the whole government not just one person . Lets remember this in November... and 2012.
August 13 2010 at 9:42 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyAnother story that pushes the liberal agenda. I just wish that once I could read a story that sticks to the facts. If Ms. Clift would have done her homework and read the new Health-Care Bill, she would realize how many mistakes she made in this short story. Existing clinics can get federal funding ... such as "Planned-Parenthood" ... which can now get enough funds to expand their operation to include Abortion Clinics ... all FEDERALLY FUNDED.
The "Anti-Choice" example clearly shows that Ms. Clift is Pro-Abortion and therefore feels the need to publish articles that are 100% personal opinion.
When will the media return to the table and do the job of the 4th branch of government?
Obama has no experience and never had it. At least Reagan was a governor. But having said that, if all it takes is a simple slogan to motivate you, you arent reaching high enough. Events, people, actions should be your motivation. Simple slogans are sound bites and can be taken out of context.
August 13 2010 at 9:20 AM Report abuse Permalink +15 rate up rate down ReplyMy initial response to this article is "Careful, your bias is showing" Interesting how she spends several sentences trying to justify her use of the phrase "anti choice" but a scant phrase on the ancillary phrase "anti life." She also apparently misses the point that the current president has been ALL about slogans. He is, however, short on ideas as to how to fix the problems which face this country and short on actual pride in this country. Given that, he will never be able to achieve Reagan's success in a second term election. Even when people doubted Reagan's abilities, his commitment to this country and its well-being were never in question. Given the proclivity of this administration to criticize our country publicly, and to vacation outside of our country at a time they are trying to encourage tourism here, Obama will never engender the kind of pro-America support base which helped Reagan to succeed.
