Petraeus for President? He Says, 'No way!'

The question has been raised more than once, especially in the blogosphere: Will Gen. David Petraeus, the architect of the 2007 surge in Iraq and now the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, run for president? And it was put to him directly Sunday on the NBC News program "Meet the Press."

In answering the question, the modern general echoed two Civil War generals.

The question came up when the NBC program's moderator, David Gregory, asked Petraeus, "What are you reading?"

The general responded that he had recently been reading about the historiography of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and how historians' views of him had changed over the decades.

Gregory responded: "Funny you should say that because I have this quote prepared for you from someone that you admire. It is this. 'I'm not a politician. Never was. I hope never to be.' Do you know who said that?"

After identifying the quote as being from Grant, who did go on to become president, Petraeus added, "Well, I am not a politician, and I will never be. And I say that with absolute conviction."

When Gregory pressed, Petraeus turned to the words of another Civil War general, William Tecumseh Sherman.

"I've said that I'll adopt what Sherman said," Petraeus told Gregory, "and go back and look at what has come to be known as a Shermanesque answer on that question." (Sherman's words were "I will not accept if nominated and wil not serve if elected.")

Just to be sure, Gregory asked, "No way, no how?"

Petraeus replied, "No way, no how!"

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Very smart man and I hope he holds to his believes. Why would anyone in their right mind want to become president is beyond me. You are in charge of a country with very limited powers ( you have to beg congress for everything). Everything that happens you get blamed for even if it was out of your control.you serve 4 or 8 years and you look like you have aged 30 years when you are done. Then you return to a private life which is never private. You can not even take your family on a vacation without being surround by secret service. Just think about this Obama's two little girls will never be able to live a private life like your child. They will have secret service with them everywhere they go and with them on everything they do. Will not even be able to go on a date with just the boy. Not to mention who ever the poor boy they want to date will be checked out from top to bottom. What kind of life is this.

Why would he want to come into this fray? All those years in combat. He's not qualified either, although, he is cute.

As they say in the stock market- Future performance might be different from past performances. Like Clint Eastwood said "A man has to know his limits" Patraeus is good at what he does and is comfortable with that. He might not be so good running the country though. Wait a year and see how things progress in Afghanistan and you might not be so impressed.

Remember Colin Powell and the Iraq War 1? He might have been a good candidate for president but compromised himself by supporting W on Iraq War 2 justification when the information was know high up to be bogus. One mistake people make is to take someone very good at one job and think they will be good at another. Sometimes it works - Eisenhower. But I suppose that doesn't stop the party from putting up someone with a spotty record of business failures like W only to discover the similar consistency in how he ran his administration and the country into the financial ground.
