Harry Reid's Call for Mosque to be Built 'Somewhere Else' Saddens Liberals, Pleases Sharron Angle

Senator Harry Reid has come out today in opposition to the construction of a controversial Islamic center and mosque in New York City, near Ground Zero.

As CNN reported,
"The First Amendment protects freedom of religion," spokesman Jim Manley said in a statement. "Sen. Reid respects that but thinks that the mosque should be built some place else. If the Republicans are being sincere, they would help us pass this long overdue bill to help the first responders whose health and livelihoods have been devastated because of their bravery on 911, rather than continuing to block this much-needed legislation."

To some, the statement was confusing. For example, Chief White House Correspondent and political director for NBC News, Chuck Todd, tweeted,
So is Harry Reid disagreeing w/interpretation of Pres. Obama's Friday-mosque comments but agreeing w/Pres. Obama's Saturday "wisdom" remark?
To liberals, it was simply disappointing. For example, prominent liberal Peter Daou Tweeted,
Hand it to Dems for being given an issue with unequivocal moral and Constitutional high ground & fumbling it

And liberal Washington Post blogger Greg Sargent wrote,
The second most powerful Democrat in the country is not willing to support the President in his efforts to defend the right of Muslims to build a cultural center on private property, if the site in question is in the vicinity of Ground Zero. This comes after his opponent, Sharron Angle, attacked him on the issue this morning.
To many, Reid's move not only looked weak, it also looked opportunistic. As such, conservative National Review reporter Jim Geraghty mocked Reid, Tweeting,

Send Harry Reid money, Dems! He needs your help so he can continue to adopt Sharron Angle's positions at a slower pace!

At least one person was happy about Reid's decision. Reid's opponent, Sharron Angle, Tweeted,
Nice of you to join us, @HarryReid.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Who cares if it is approved or not, they will NEVER find union labor to build it and they MUST use union labor. This story is getting too much press. New Yorkers will not build this so the story is dead.

Tom,
Remember Blumberg got the law changed so he could run for a 3rd term.
What 's to prevent him from attempting to change the right to work law for his position in this matter.
I could also see these people forming their own unions.

To me the issue isn't freedom of religion or the right to build a mosque on private property. Rather, it's about the developers of the mosque being sensitive to the emotional pain inflicted on so many people by the events of 9/11. Surely there are a great many other locations in NYC where the mosque could be built. Whether it is intended or not, building the mosque so close to Ground Zero feels like a slap in the face.

Ms. Angle, I'm not sure petty 5th grade antics are helping you in your campaigning. It would be nice if you would actually answer reporters and constituent's questions of you, rather than just hiding behind a twitter page where someone else can post for you. Not exactly what Nevada is looking for in a Senator. Mr. Reid enjoys the same freedom (of opinion) as anyone else in this country, and it would be INCORRECT of you to twist his words or TRY to misrepresent him in any way, as you have done in the past, and are attempting to do now....FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE of getting your name in the news. This would be a good time to voice YOUR positionon this issue, rather than just TRY and attack someone else. Not very classy.

So why is this a partisan political issue? And even more important, why are the democrats siding with the mosque inhabitors-aka muslims? Lets put a Walmart there instead and then listen to these progressives howl about property rights.
