Sen. Harry Reid Says Mosque Should Not Be Built Near Ground Zero

Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) doesn't agree with President Obama on the headline-grabbing issue of building a mosque and Islamic community center near Manhattan's Ground Zero.

The Senate majority leader said in a statement Monday that the controversial center should be built somewhere else in New York, and not within blocks of the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, The Hill reported.

"The First Amendment protects freedom of religion," said Reid spokesman Jim Manley. "Sen. Reid respects that but thinks that the mosque should be built someplace else."

Reid's position doesn't sit well with liberals, but Reid opponent Sharron Angle hails it, PD's Matt Lewis reports.

On Friday, President Obama signaled his support for the mosque, saying, "Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country."

Reid, who is fighting a tough re-election battle, is the highest-profile Democrat to come out in opposition to the Islamic center.

The senator's entry into the mosque controversy may end up being moot. Haaretz reported late Monday that Muslim religious and business leaders will announce plans to abandon the lower Manhattan project and move to an alternative site.

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. I once lived in an apartment house across the street from a mosque where 100 men or more would pray in the courtyard. There were no women. Religion and polictics are the same in the mid east. A religion that discriminates against women is archaic. There is no respect for the people of the families of those that died. They have always built a mosque at the sign of victory. Place it somewhere else. If it goes up they should build a Hooters across the street.

You don't understand the first thing about Islam. There was American Muslims who dies on 9/11 as well. But I guess the first amendment doesn't protect them, huh?

Senator Reid has joined the right wing in suggesting that a person or group of persons should not exercise their rights based on their religion. I am appalled by the uproar that this has caused and by all of the attention that the media is giving it. That the build of a community center / house of worship is getting this much attention just proves how hypocritical some of the American population is. We either believe in the rights that our country is founded on and are willing to fight to allow people to exercise those rights; or, we don't. Those that oppose the building, or that suggest it should be built elsewhere are showing their true discriminatory and oppressive nature.

Look back at everything Reid has done in lock step with the demo party since Obama was elected and you will recognize his stance for what it is. Pure politics. The man no longer has any real convictions.

Never believe a die-hard politician. Reid know the American people are very upset with building the Mosque. Since Obama has made a public statement about it - the Democrats that are up for re-election will have to make a decision to stand with Obama or denounce what he has said. Most politicians will side (in voice) only with the American people to be re-elected. Please America - don't be fooled.

He did not do this on his own. Sharon Angle challenged him on the issue.

Today they are saying on TV that the White House is furious with Reid for opposing the president's position. And that is exactly what is wrong with the two parties. Everyone is expected to toe the line regardless of what they believe or, more importantly, what those who put them in office believe. And it's clear the vast majority of Americans do not want this mosque built anywhere near Ground Zero as a matter of respect for those who died and their families.

The constitution does not allow freedom of law, like subscribing to Shari'a Law. Islam and Shari'a are ONE, folks. Check it out and see if that is what you want!

There is freedom of religion and they can build a mosque, but they themselves, should understand why people don't want it built there and it is so insensitive to pursue it. It's like they are trying to rub salt into the wound. But!, you have to think it would put people (like terrorists) in a very advantageous position. Good hide out. Any we Know the bad guys use the mosques for shelter. It's hallowed ground.

I can't believe it, but Harry Reid and I finally agree on something.

Great article. It's something I keep saying but without being as articulate. The simple message is: Don't do what your enemies want you to do. This is something that the right wing has never learned and thus is the unwitting ally of Al-queda with its message of hate and fear of the entire Muslim religion. With enemies like the American right wing, Al-queda doesn't need friends.
